Rating: Summary: The Fern Guide : Northeastern and Midland United States and Review: This book is very technical and difficult to understand with out previous knowledge of ferns. The dichotomous key uses terms that are not found in the glossary and diagrams do not show all of the appropriate parts needed to use the key succesfully. The book is well written and drawings are very usefull, but without a easy to use key the book is difficult to use in the field to identify unknown plants.
Rating: Summary: Better than THREE reference books, in one handy package Review: Yes, the technical side is included, but I find that a 'plus' in this book, not a negative.Since 135 species are included in this book on the Northeastern and Midland USA and adjacent CANADA areas, this one book serves the same purpose as having to carry around three (or more!) separate reference books. This little book includes a glossary of technical terms and indexes to scientific and COLLOQUIAL NAMES! The book is handy enough to carry along on nature walks and trail hikes. The level can still be used by either a beginner or advanced students in taxonomy. The many drawings are clear and excellent. Great for hikers, botanists, naturalists -- and just plain fern lovers!
