Rating: Summary: Great book...ignore the sour grapes Review: ...Terri Crisp once again has written a moving, behind-the-scenes book about animals rescue. Like any follow-up read, you probably won't experience the same feelings you felt when you read Out of Harm's Way (if you haven't read THAT book yet...do! It'smarvelous!). But you WILL read stories and tug your heart about animal rescues...they will make you cry, they will make you laugh, and they might just inspire you to get involved. I always hate to classify books like this as a "good read." It's never good when people and animals die. It's never good when animals are neglected and abandoned, even in the wake of tremendous disastar. But a good read it is--it's great stories accompanied by great lessons. You see, what Terri Crisp really does best is educate people about how to prepare for the worst through example--and this book provides fine examples of what to do and what NOT to do. What she wants you to do is get your act together and make a plan to save your family--of which your pets are an important part--in the event that disaster strikes your home. Part of this book illustrates the politics behind the work. You've seen it at work here on the review boards at Amazon. Now, read the book. You'll get your good read, and maybe save a life, too.
Rating: Summary: All About Terri Review: Poorly writen, poorly conceived, and too much about Terri and not enough about the animals.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: Terri Crisp does wonderful work with animal rescues, but not with a typewriter. At several points, she mentions being under time pressure to complete this book - that's obvious in the repetitive and stilted dialog she attempts to recreate. You can almost hear her counting the words. She also seems to spend much more time than is necessary (or appropriate) complaining about the food at rescue sites; you'd think there'd be some form of 'professional courtesy' among volunteers, but in any case, it's not of interest to the reader who buys a book hoping to learn about animal rescue, not cuisine. I would stick with her first book, Out of Harm's Way, which - although also a victim of sloppy editing - had more useful information about the intended topic.
Rating: Summary: Emergency Animal Rescuers: Their Trials and Tribulations! Review: That's what this book should have been called. And had it been so titled, this reader would never have bought it! I requested this book for my birthday as I very much enjoyed Out of Harm's Way by the same author. Sadly, this book was a very disappointing read; in fact, I gave up completing it after the 160th page or so. I expected to read more stories about animals being rescued in emergent situations, but by the time I put the book aside, very few animals had been saved at all or at least not in a way that had much impact with this reader. In fact, I wondered why the author even chose to describe rescues that had such little story to them. While these were described in just the barest of terms, there were far too many passages on the trials and tribulations of being an emergency animal rescuer: the ongoing woes of dealing with dirty clothes, unbrushed teeth, other people snoring, lack of sleep, mosquito bites, repeated trips to ..., and complaints about ... food. I believe the author meant these bits to be humorous but they were written too heavyhandedly and repetitively to be funny. In fact, overall the book is written pedantically w/stilted dialogue about things that no animal lover cares about, such as who said hi to whom before getting started on the day's work...over and over again. Perhaps the animal rescues experienced by the author and her colleagues were more dramatic and/or touching than described in this book. If so, this reader didn't get it. It seemed more like the author was stressed by working under a publishing deadline (which she reiterated more than once within the 1st half of the text) and was desperate to meet her contractual obligations (despite having the help of a co-writer on board as well.) Unfortunately, her/their writing kept getting interrupted by calls to emergency animal rescues, which is forgiveable. The publishing and selling of this book, however, is not. I put down this book firmly convinced that anyone truly interested in supporting EARS, would do far better to simply actively work for it than to read... or write... about it.
Rating: Summary: Heartwarming and inspiring!! Review: This book has it all and is the perfect read for animal lovers. The stories are warm, funny, touching, inspiring--Terri Crisp has a way of writing that tugs at your heart and stirs your soul. If you loved her first book, Out of Harms Way, you're really going to love this one. And if you haven't read the first one, don't worry, you can start here. Terri recounts true stories from recent disasters and shares the lessons she's learned. Many animals survive thanks to the efforts the Emergency Animal Rescue Service team, but some don't. Terri Crisp doesn't shy away from the hard lessons but shares them in a way that gives you hope and understanding. Story after story depicts the incredible bond between people and animals. Make sure you have your box of Kleenex ready when you curl up with this wonderful book!
Rating: Summary: Disappointing after "Out of Harm's Way" Review: To all my fellow readers who were disappointed in this poorly written book after enjoying "Out of Harm's Way" so much, I believe I have solved the mystery of Terri's disappearing writing skills. Look closely at the cover of "Out of Harm's Way" and you will see "by Terri Crisp (large letters) and Samantha Glen (small letters)." I have just finished reading Samantha Glen's delightful new book "Best Friends", and I now know who wrote the warm and wonderful "Out of Harm's Way".

Rating: Summary: Great Book Brings It all Home Review: What great reading for the animal lover! This book gave me a feel for what it's like to work in a real disaster and what goes on behind the scenes. It made me realize what hard work animal rescue can be and made me appreciate the people that devote their lives in this way. There were times I laughed out loud and times that I wish someone had warned me to get a Kleenex! I thought this book was a great follow-up to Crisp's other book, "Out of Harm's Way" because it shows disasters that were not necessarily as "media-worthy" but still just as important to the lives saved and impacted. It shows that not only is Terri a true asset to animals, but also to the people that care for and love them. I highly recommend both books and anxiously await a third from Terri Crisp!
Rating: Summary: All About What Really Matters- Animal Rescue Review: While this book might not contain as many fuzzy, feel-good, heartstring-tuggers as Crisp's earlier book, Out of Harm's Way, I think her second effort measures up just as well to her first. This book features stories from disasters that didn't generate as much press and also focuses on the nitty gritty of animal rescue work- she describes some of the dangers, the politics, the risks, and the disappointments. The book isn't intended to be a bunny-hugging Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul- it serves as an eye-opening introduction to the difficult but ultimately satisfying world of animal rescue, written by a true trailblazer in the field. Recommended (and inspiring) reading for anyone considering volunteering for EARS.
