Rating: Summary: Strong All-around Sailing Book Review: This book does a fine job of covering what you actually need to know to sail a boat. Particularly useful are the sections on docking, picking up a buoy, anchoring and dealing with emergencies. In addition, the chapter on knot-tying is well done. For instance, the explanation (and illustrations), of splicing is clear enough that you can actually learn to make an eye splice from it -- I did. To summarize, it is the best general sailing book I've seen.

Rating: Summary: Excellent Beginners Book Review: This book is an excellent starting manual for beginners. Granted, when sailing there is no substitute for experience, but the beginning sailor, without the benefit of classes, will have no trouble learning the ropes after this book. Other books just gloss over beginning sailing, and focus on cruising or racing. This is the pure and simple beginners handbook. Text is clear and concise, summaries and vocabulary lists accompany each chapter, and the photos are useful with descriptive captions. Definitely worth checking out.
