Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Kids' lightweight intro into ultra cycling
Review: Marathon Cycling is an odd book and should obviously NOT be confused with any serious training material. (There are better atlernatives by Ed Pavelka, Arnie Baker, et al.) It seems to be trying to explain to 5th-8th graders why dad (or mom) spends hours upon hours on the bicycle training for X, where X is an event like Paris-Brest-Paris, Furnace 508 or Race Across AMerica. It doesn't do a very good job expanding on the "why" (though this is hard to explain to most people), or conveying much enthusiasm for the sport itself: the recommendations for younger riders is to either crew or "try a smaller event like 100 miles." Marathon Cycling could use some of the alacrity, intricate detail, and panoramic enthusiasm seen in Dorling Kindersley books.
