Rating: Summary: Statistical studies of atmospheric problems Review: Sometimes you wonder what statistics can contribute to science, especially one dominated by deterministic and physical approaches. Surprisingly there are plenty, at least this is the trend of future. With more computing power and more model improvement, quality of today's weather forecast depends as much on computer code as on the data input and assimilation of data from land, satellite and other sources. This is book of a succesful attempt at introduing modern statistics into current atmospheric research. Some breakthroughs have been made, such as a systematic statistical design approach to improved weather prediction, and the hierarchical modeling approach to modeling space-time processes. I especially like the fact that this book contains excellent papers on a variety of topics which are of interest to atmospheric scientists, and that a variety of modern statistical techniques have been covered such as spatial statistics, modern prediction methods, functional data analysis, and chaotic dynamics. I expect students and young researchers from statistical sciences will find this book offers totally new challenges and interesting research topics, and experienced researchers in atmospheric sciences will find in this book some new techniques which may help in their research.
