Summary: why boys don't talk and why we care
Review: This book is a necessity for any parent of an adolescent boy. The depth of its message resounds throughout our culture every day. This book insightfully probes the reasons that our sons don't communicate the same way as our daughters and explores methods any parent can use to understand and appreciate their boys. This book is incredibly "reader-friendly" in its layout and general accessibility. I would strongly recommend it.

  Summary: look elsewhere for insight
Review: This book is a waste of time. It continually references Pollack and Kindlon, who have written much better books about boys. It did not contain any new insights. It is an academic study, more like a compilation of other peoples' work, and gives no advice or examples of how to actually improve communication with your boy. I am tired of these books that give us a bunch of handwringing about how bad things are for boys, and then don't tell us how, as individuals, to deal with it.

Summary: Wish I had this resource when my boys were younger!
Review: This is an excellent resource for mothers and fathers. It is filled with great insights and practical advice. In that I have raised four sons, I can attest to the value of this book. It should be required reading for parents of boys of all ages.

  Summary: Valuable resource for parents
Review: Why Boys Don't Talk and Why We Care is an excellent resource for parents, educators, and community members in better understanding the realities of boys' lives and for providing support for boys in forming positive self-concepts and strong interpersonal relationships. The book contains clearly presented reviews of research on boys' development, as well as dozens of anecdotes gathered in focus groups with adolescent boys and girls and parents. It includes many useful strategies and activities for parents to use in exploring their relationships with their sons. The book sets a positive and inclusive tone which recognizes the need to look at cultural, ethnic, and economic factors in boys' lives, as well as at gender-related expectations. It also discusses the need to address issues impacting on girls as well as boys, and does not place "blame" on any group or area of society for problems and challenges faced by boys. The book is a thought-provoking publication which inspires readers to open and maintain dialogues with boys about the realities of their lives.
