Rating: Summary: Shocking! Review: I have just finished reading this book. I have a nine year old and a nine month old child. I just cured my nine month old's 10th ear infection without the horrible side effects of the antibiotics from the previous nine. I grew up in a world of medicine and I am shocked to find that it is usually unneccessary. I am also terrified to continue with my daughter's vaccinations. I only hope that more parents find this book and start taking control over their child's health.
Rating: Summary: DON'T PASS THIS ONE UP! Review: I have read this book so many times, and every time I read it there is always something I have passed over or didn't really get the first time. It was so wonderful to have an actual doctor, himself, to give me great peace of mind on so many different ways to , if anything, treat when my children when they are sick. Not only was he a doctor for 30yrs, but it really helped knowing too that he was a Pediatrician. That made me feel better to know that he had my child's best interest in mind. From all the books I have read by Dr. Mendelsohn, I have come to the conclusion that I believe he was a man who highly respected the "medical" community. He even tells you how much he respects the medical community in this book. He even tells how and why medicine is so important and how wonderful technology has been increasing and how and why that is so important too. However, there are many reasons that I feel he is qualified and obligated to inform "us" the public of the knowledge he has. I beleive in a way that he is obligated to let us know what he knows because of his vow to be a doctor and to always have our best health in mind. I believe he is more than qualified to inform us because not only has he been in "medicine" so long to be able to make a highly educated decision on health issues from all his experience, but he has reasearched many topics himself. Especially in this book. He has given many actual facts and statistics on how the AMA(The American Medical Association) has not been completely honest with the public about immunizatons and many other health issues.(Why should they be completely honest about health issues when they can make billions of dollars a year off of people like you and me who are clueless about "their" world and how they manipulate all of us.) This book has given me and my husband such peace about our children's health. From giving birth, to what to do if your child has a high fever, to where did immunizations come from and what are their true affects on people. Get this book! Read it! You will never regret it! Everyone needs this book in their home library!
Rating: Summary: waste of time! Review: I just finished this book, and let me say it was the biggest waste of time! This man obviously has lost his license to practice. I turned to this book because I do not vaccinate my children and I was looking for alternatives to modern medicine. Instead of finding ANY usefull information, I was struck by the sheer stupidity of this man. He says not to worry if your child has a fever of 105. He says to give a baby with an upset stomach whiskey! Do not waste your time or your money on this book. You would be better off asking people with no knowledge of children for advice, than to take anything this man says seriously.
Rating: Summary: This doc was a brave pioneer!! Review: I love this book. It is the first book that I ever read on alternative views to children's health and it left me wanting to read even more on the subject. I am an R.N. and know that we parents should not just blindly put our trust in our pediatricians. We need to read to educate ourselves and take an active part in our children's health--that is what Dr. Mendelsohn tries to tell us. We take our children to the doctor and give them all sorts of medicines for every little thing when we can handle lots of stuff ourselves at home--safely. Fevers in themselves are not to be feared, they are a normal part of illness in children (NOT INFANTS). He said this years ago and now I am even starting to read it in the mainstream press. If you like everything neat and normal, don't buy this book. If you like a book that lays all the cards on the table, dares to be different and makes you think, YES buy this book. Because of this book, I have found a doctor who allows me to be part of my children's healthcare not just tells me what to do and expects me to blindly follow it. Dr. Mendelsohn was a respected physician up until his death and dared to be different before alternative medicine was cool.
Rating: Summary: Pediatricians-in-training, READ THIS BOOK! Review: I'm a medical student who will soon be a pediatrician. This book should be absolutely required reading for any future (and current, for that matter!) pediatrician, not to mention new or soon-to-be parents. Dr. Mendelsohn's book is a wonderful reminder of the power of natural healing, as well as a great source of advice and comfort for parents. I'll be giving every new parent in my practice a free copy of this book!
Rating: Summary: This is a book I wish my parents had known. Review: If you felt suspicious of certain doctor's practices, You may have been right all along. Dr. Mendelsohn does a very thorough job of exposing questionable practices and needless risks and why these are still around. His true greatness shines when he admits to his own doctoring business as usual and how he himself learned to do more with less (drugs, that is). In clear words he tells how much diagnostic value parental observation actually has and when to see a doctor urgently. If you have children or if you foresee to create bodies for them, or if you just know someone who would benefit from healthy advice, learn more and enjoy this classic. A true gift.
Rating: Summary: too antagonistic Review: The title says it all. This book is NOT good for anyone who actually respects their doc, which is most of us. Go for something less hostile and more respectful.
Rating: Summary: great book with some old fashioned thoughts Review: There are A LOT of facts in this book, wheather you like them or not. This is a great over all book with practical advise you can find in many other places. You do not need to poison your child to make them better. This has great information on how the human body functions as well as how pediatricians function. It also has some older methods and opinions that arn't all based in fact. READ THIS BOOK, and then read a few others and make the call yourself. Thats what parents do, make the best, informed decision for their child!
Rating: Summary: Caution: Get a second opinion! Review: There are many great aspects to this book: a fever is necessary, avoid unnecessary trips to the doctor. However, when it comes to vaccines, do your homework! I found the author to be biased against vaccines. From another source, I saw a graph of the *actual data* of incidence of measles before and after the measles vaccine was introduced, sure looks to me like the vaccine had a major effect! Nothing in life is without some risk, getting a vaccine, not getting a vaccine. Research for yourself, from unbiased sources and actual data, the side effects of vaccines and the potential complications of "common" diseases. Measles can make a child deaf or worse. My children have some vaccines and not others; It's up to you to decide which risk you will take. Buy the book, but get a second opinion about vaccines.
Rating: Summary: Commonsense Guidebook for Every Parent Review: This book does what it claims - it puts parents back in control of their children's health. Worth its weight in gold for parents and parents-to-be.First time through its a revelation. After that it becomes a very handy reference and guidebook. The advice is practical and economical. This book completely changed my thinking on how to treat my children's illnesses. On the plus side, - Thorough, easy to understand - Travels well (compact paperback) - Advice applies anywhere - Well organized chapters and index - Step by step instructions for knowing when you should call the doctor Not so great, - I would have liked some quick reference tables for help in diagnosing particular symptoms. (The information is there, but it can be hard to read through it all if you aren't calm). If you only buy one book on children's health care, make it this one!
