Rating: Summary: Insightful! Review: I discovered this book eleven years ago as a new mother. I was amazed and delighted to find out the wonderous ways that my baby's brain worked. I followed the 'essence' of the book - tempering it so that it was always low-stress and joyful and following the suggestions according to our daily mood (not the rigid schedule suggested). We modififed the suggestions so that everything was fun - she always begged for more. Fast forward to today...I have three children, ages 7,9 and 11. They are all happy, confident, independent and secure. They are all outstanding athletes. They all attend school in a gifted program and excel as students. But even more - they love school, they love to read, they love learning. Do yourself and your child the favor of a lifetime - read this book!
Rating: Summary: Blown away---this is extremely exciting stuff Review: I have a 1-year boy, I've just read most of Doman's books, including this one, and I am suddenly ecstatic with a new purpose to my life as never before (I'm an older parent). This gentle man, Glenn Doman, with such a soft heart --oh god, I'm overwhelmed by what he has given me; inspiration, motivation, and a well-structured do-able teaching plan for my son. As I began reading his stuff the words "privileged, upper echelon, aristocracy, wealthy, nobility, elite" kept running through my mind--definetly not of my ilk, I mistakenly thought. But as I delved more deeply, I was stirred to remember my own childhood and all the unfulfilled cravings I had for love, acceptance, and for KNOWLEDGE. Knowledge so that I could better comprehend and enjoy the wonder of my world. Instead, I was thrust into captivity (beginning with the playpen), where years of boredom caused by lack of stimulation, eventually destroyed my ravenous thirst for information. At age 5, as a "dim wit", I reluctantly and fearfully entered public school. I found my 'place' as a slightly below-average student, and hobbled through to the end, glad to be free of it all by grade 12. In my forties I entered college, did exceptionally well after which my 'real life' finally began. What happened to the front half of my life! My son, my precious baby boy--I'm going to "joyously and without pressure of any kind" feed his appetite for knowledge... "kids would rather learn than eat"(!) Glenn Doman and his team have lit a spark which I hope will finally 'catch' in this new century. Teaching very young children to love learning, I too believe, can ultimately help make a more compassionate world.
Rating: Summary: It is amazing how simple it is! Review: I have a 4 month old daughter and I am excited to get started with Glenn Doman's Math, Reading and Encyclopedic Knowledge. My Husband and I are both teachers and see children struggle every day with reading and math, especially fractions. If we can give our daughter a head start, it is more than worth the time it takes to create the materials. I found that a Red Bingo Dabber works great for creating the math dots. Not only is it cheap, it makes it very quick and easy to create the math cards. I did 100 in 20 minutes. The reading cards take more time, but it is less time than I usually put in creating classroom materials.
Rating: Summary: Not Only Teaches Reading, Provides a Gentle Philosophy Review: I used this method 17 years ago on my 17 month old son. He was reading by the time he was two--Hardy Boys before five--with excellent comprehension. He's now a sophomore at MIT on full scholarship, played Varsity lacrosse, etc. He's a great kid and was a great student. Doman's book was wonderful. Doman's philosophy is wonderful--teach as a reward, never a punishment--always stop before the child wants to--avoid testing--avoid pressure--deveop the physical, artisitic, and cultural elements of the person as well. Buy it! Read it! Follow it!
Rating: Summary: 194 pages of drivel before any instructions. Review: I was pretty disappointed with this book. It was recommend by a co-worker, so I bought it. There are 194 pages of anecdotes about why its a good idea to use the exercises in the book before one gets to the first exercise. This sort of thing is usually covered in the introduction, or maybe the first chapter, but not the first 15! Does anyone really need that much convincing *after* buying the book?
Rating: Summary: Worth reading Review: I will probably follow the advice on teaching math. He makes some very compelling points about the value of using dots vs. traditional symbols for numbers. It makes sense to me that early training of this type could enhance math ability. The general philosophy is also logical and appealing - babies are programmed to learn. This is what they want and what they enjoy. I look forward to fulfilling this need, encouraging curiosity, and instilling a love of learning. But...I can't imagine that *ANY* parent's time is best spent preparing some of the materials described. It seems utterly ridiculous to me. After all, children learn more from watching what you do than from listening to what you say, and I don't think an obsessive parent who spends half their time making flash cards is the best role model. Better to be a good example of a fulfilled person with adult interests.
Rating: Summary: This book is only the beginning! Review: My parents did Glenn Doman's entire program -- reading, math, physical and encyclopedic knowledge as well as Suzuki violin -- with me, my younger sister and brothers. It had such a profound impact on our lives. We all have retained the love of learning into adulthood, and NEVER felt pressured as children. If you want to give your children the greatest gift ever (after the gift of life) then please read all of Glenn Doman's books! This book is meant to be an introduction -- you will find the program easier if you read every book in the series. Have a wonderful time!
Rating: Summary: Incredible results Review: My wife used this book religiously since our son was 1. Now he is a 4 3/4 yr old preschooler who has been reading basically since he could talk. His preschool teacher gives him assignments in a 4th grade math book, but they are too easy for him. He totally understands math, fractions, cubes, and square roots. His biggest challenge is writing his equations, as his writing level is at about grade level. He's also a wonderful, caring, well adjusted, and sweet little guy.
Rating: Summary: Providing a basic framework/mindset for progressive parents Review: The downside of the book is the fact that the author uses a lot of time and space to go over his points with 3 or 4 times the explanation. Usually most readers should get it the first time over. Thus the book lends itself to a more jumping style of reading. The bad things aside the book gives plenty of input and inspiration to any progressive parent or teacher. I am using the principles daily on my infant daughter with great results. The book lays out a blueprint for basically teaching the infant any subject or anything, so it is really up to you how far you want to take your child from there. I'll recommend it to anyone who is interested in maximizing children's mental abilities.
Rating: Summary: When reading the book, be prepared to follow its suggestions Review: This book was very enlightening for my husband and I. We used these methods for both of our children. Both of them are in the gifted program at school and have been playing violin since 2 1/2. My son is in 6th grade making straight A's and my daughter is in 4th grade doing the same thing. They are also very active in sports activities. This book was the starting point of tapping into their potential at a very young age. The methods set forth in this book are not just meant as suggestions, but they actually work! We are very happy to have found this book, and are reaping its benefits already.
