Rating: Summary: What a waste of time. A first grader could have done better Review: Godin just tries too hard to be clever, but in the end he cannot seem to come up with the goods. I guess that is why he primarily writes about marketing instead of doing it. Perhaps the only thing that he is good at is marketing himself.I was hoping that this book would be an enlightening, fresh and interesting look at the techniques used by several successful contemporary companies to distinguish themselves in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Not so. Unfortunately, the premise of the book is erroneous! You do not have to toss out everything you know to do something "remarkable" (the way a purple cow in a field of Guernseys would be remarkable.)
Rating: Summary: Purple Snooze Review: This book is a vapid bore. Save yourself the money. Here's what it says: Make your company remarkable. Good idea. Unfortunately, it doesn't say how, or even present anything more than sketchy, cutesy and often confusing case studies and examples.
Rating: Summary: Quick and Easy Read Review: I read this book in two nights (sorry - I was tired on night one). I don't think Seth Godin meant for this book to be prescriptive, but rather to engender a discussion within organizations that find themselves in a situation in which they may not have produced anything "new" lately. It's a morale booster and can serve as a good motivational tool. The book is short, well written, and intellectually stimulating - all nice changes from the regular how-to business books.
Rating: Summary: How to be extraordinary --and the best! Review: If you are interested in standing out from the crowd, then this is definitely your book. If you are interested in being your/the best and bringing out the best in others, then Optimal Thinking: How to be Your Best Self is your book. If you are interested in standing out, optimal performance and optimal results, read both books.
Rating: Summary: More Buzz than Substance Review: Quite disappointed. I expect something exciting other than another book telling people to be different. I prefer a solid book such as 'High Intensity Marketing' or 'Kellogg on Marketing' - both are ideas packed and very practical. I like his style of writing but at the end of the day..it is "quality of the milk" that matters....not the color of the cow.
Rating: Summary: Interesting and Informative, but... Review: As a small business owner, I was recommended this book on the hopes that it would break the mold of every other business book I've read, namely that it would be able to provide more than just broad theories that were not necessarily applicable to the "real world". While it did provide some excellent case studies and some very good ideas, from a personal level I felt that it focused to much on products and not enough on services, which I feel is a much harder area to "be remarkable" as it is not a tangible good. I completely understand the philosophy and the usefulness that some might find from it, but it didn't really do me much good. I am sure I can use parts of it, but I guess my expectations were too high. I can, however, understand the value that others might find from it and so might rate it higher.
Rating: Summary: Purple Cows Could Give Better Marketing Advice Review: I was really hoping this book would be...well, a purple cow! I thought I would get some new and creative advice on marketing my organization, but this certainly didn't help. All of the examples are based on common sense and despite the fancy title this book was dull and boring. Don't waste your time or money.
Rating: Summary: Horrible Review: What a waste of money. This book does nothing but ask questions that youve probably already asked yourself. He gives you no guidance on how to find the solutions your looking for, or how to become "remarkable". His only advice is basically "Just keep trying".... thanks. It really seems like he ripped off doug halls "jump start your business brain". Except, in Dougs book he offers you an answer, and stratagies to creating your own new unique, remarkable ideas. Purple cow does none of this. Its 130 pages of pure "I wish i had my [money] back" Save your [money] and check out Kellog on Marketing Oligilvy on Advertising Jump Start Your Business Brain (if your looking for real information on making your business unique)
Rating: Summary: Worthwhile. Review: Absolutely, absolutely worth the money & time you will spend reading it. More than what not to do, the book gives you places to go and things to do, ideas as well as examples. What more could you want from a business book?
Rating: Summary: I don't believe it Review: Are people actually buying this POS? It seems business-school-wanna-bes are particularly victims, so let me tell them that they are missing NOTHING special! I like Seth Godin's columns in Fast Company, but there is absolutely nothing new here - it's as if the publisher wanted to rip people off individually. Save your money.
