Rating: Summary: CD runs under windows - unacceptable Review: All I can say is, yeah the book is okay, but the included CD runs under *windows*. How ridiculous is that? Have these folks heard of using linux as one's primary, desktop OS for everything? How can you possibly publish a study guide for a linux cert with software that doesn't run on linux? Crazy
Rating: Summary: Good Book despite Cd-Linux Incompatability Review: Before I being, let me mention that I run the premiere websitefor people studying for their RHCE exam at ( )Ireally like the book itself. It's very thorough. At the end of each chapter there is a "two minute drill" which summarizes the chapter, and a self test which helps you see how well you understand the material. The self-test at the end of each chapter has around 20 questions! This is much better than other books that only have 10 questions at the end of each chapter. The practice tests on the cdrom are not usable under Linux. If they aren't going to make their software compatible with Linux, they could at least grant us the ability to do that in their licensing agreement. I invite people who want practice tests to visit my website. But, despite the sillyness of relasing a book about Linux with software that requires Windows, I like the book. ( ) END

Rating: Summary: Waste of money Review: fdisk : it says linux comes with a non destructive partitioning utility lilo : completely unclear about the different error messages. mbr : says each disk partition will have an MBR chapters on installation is useless. Overall Barkakati book is hundred times useful. Shame that I didn t know before spending money.
Rating: Summary: Don't bother wasting $42 Review: Firstly - required OS for pre and post tests is windoze. Secondly - when it comes to real world solutions the book suggests you read the man pages and HOWTOs. Plenty of docs reprinted - hardware howto takes up 20 pages. Seems like they were struggling to find content and reprinted much of the HOWTOs. Might as well save the $42 and read /usr/doc/* anyway. Disappointing for a Red Hat affiliate company. I prefer SAMS RedHat Linux Unleashed for real content.

Rating: Summary: Worth buying! Review: Gives all information needed to pass the test to become a RHCE. Including the DIFFERENT class installations which require DIFFERENT amounts of disk space.
Rating: Summary: More useful to newbies than most other Linux books Review: I don't really qualify as a newbie anymore - but I wish I had this book when I started out. I must say that I own more than my fair share of Linux books, and this is the one that I refer to most of the time for a deeper understanding of stuff that I only 'kinda' know, or to find relevant, concise info about troubleshooting issues. I DON'T like reading online documentation. It's a waste of electricity, and besides, I haven't setup my scroll mouse. Reading that much material online would certainly give me a headache! Anyone who wants to be able to answer most of the posts you see for RedHat support should buy this book. Don't be intimidated by the fact that it's a cert guide. It will serve you well even after you are quite experienced.
Rating: Summary: I passed Review: I have a fair amount of experience using Linux, and I bought this book to help study for my exam. I passed pretty easily, and I have this book to partially thank. The contnet of the exam (and the book) is difficult stuff, and it's obvious that these authors really understand it. Thanks.
Rating: Summary: It's the CD ... ! Review: I have read all those remarks from users who have low-rated this book as it came with a Windows CD. Accepted, WindoZE sucks,... but, how can we expect an user trying to learn Linux, and pass the RHCE to fair well, if he cannot even get his X-Windows working to browse the CD comfortably? And, besides, to a newbie, the CD would be indispensible, perhaps, it should come with a HOW-To partition your hard drive pre-requisite notification on it. It's best for people with a home network, whereby they could browse the CD while simultaneously trying them out on their Linux box, or, at the least with a telnet/X-server (xdmcp or something) access to a linux box.
