Summary: Overall, an Excellent Study Bible
Review: First of all, I was pleased that the NKJV was the version used for this bible because I do consider the "textus receptus" to be superior to the critical text, but I don't care for Elizabethan English... The study notes are informative and extensive, though as with any commentary, I would say to take it with a grain of salt. I thought that some of the more controversial passages were not given a full treatment. Nevertheless this has become my preferred bible whether for light reading or more in-depth study. I recommend it.

Summary: Great Commentary
Review: Good translation, and the commentary is first rate. In addition to the bottom-page comments on specific verses, there are longer comments on specific topics and words. One caveat though, where some study Bibles will give several possible interpretations for a specific verse, this one will often (not always) just say "it seems best to interpret this as such-and-such". Still, there is a lot of useful information here, I'm definitely glad I got this.

Summary: Very intelligent, full featured, and scholarly labor of love
Review: Here is a Bible for serious study and/or devotion. The devotional quality is achieved primarily through the tone of the copious and scholarly notes, which are reverent, main stream, and remarkably non-intrusive. I have a number of other study Bibles, and have generally found them lacking.

I appreciate the lofty literary style of the King James (Authorized) version, and wanted to try the New King James (NKJV). I have spent hours comparing the two versions. The poetic books are almost unchanged except for long obsolete words, pronouns and inflectional verb endings. The meter is unchanged. Other books have been further updated with modern sentence structure where it is most needed. The result still sounds magnificent and timeless, and glows like a freshly restored work of art.

The Nelson SB contains a remarkably comprehensive concordance which contains proper nouns and describes them within the concordance listing. Thus the concordance can also be regarded as a Bible dictionary.

There are eight pages of color maps in the rear. I would have liked a color map showing the twelve tribes at the time of the judges (after Joshua's conquest of Canaan), but the intext maps show this very nicely, so this is a quibble.

Nelson's SB is most remarkable for its highly tailored, complete and accurate annotations, which can only have been achieved through a devotion to the work and a lot of toil. This book is quite evidently a labor of love, and this, more than any other quality ranks it as the finest SB I've encountered.

I received the black bonded leather edition. Its Gold stamped quality leather cover and gold edged paper, as well as the overall high quality of workmanship make this book a delight to the senses. A real treasure all 'round.

Summary: The Most Comprehensive and Most In Depth Study Bible So Far
Review: I am so thrilled whenever I read the Nelson NKJV Study Bible. It's was so organized, and full of Divine revelation on every annotation for each of the verse. The Word focus feature also gives me an in-depth understanding of the meaning in its original Greek and Hebrew word. Each summary chart and in depth study article is a devotional and theological illumination to understand more the very context of the written Word and its application in our lives. I have been collecting all kinds study bible and so far this is the best and most complete.

Summary: A report of what we editors intended to achieve.
Review: I am the Old Testament editor of the Nelson Study Bible. I wish to express gratitude to God for the many positive responses we have received from readers. For those who are considering this edition of the Bible, I would like to state our hopes as we worked nearly ten years on the study notes. Dr. Earl D. Radmacher, Dr. H. Wayne House, and I wished to have emphases in our Study Bible on clarity of expression, warmth of devotion, and directness of style. We wished to emphasize world missions from the beginning (Genesis), God's holy worship, and the overall importance of the Word of God in the life of the believer. We had more than forty contributers to help us to achieve these goals. We trust this edition of the Bible will be used in God's kindness in the lives of many people to build understanding, to develop godliness, and to further God's purposes in the world in our day. Warmly in Christ.

Summary: Incredible
Review: I first bought a Nelson Study Bible five years ago and over this period of time it has played an integral part in the development of my understanding of the Bible and more importantly, of God. I have never seen such detailed, historically valid, and readable commentary in any other study Bible; I haven't seen anything even get close.

The commentary was written and edited by 40 contributors with doctorial degrees in theology from seminaries all over the nation (five from Dallas Theological Seminary), and is nothing short of astonishing to look at and read. The focus is on the historical background behind the text of the Bible, which enables the reader to more fully understand some of the more difficult passages in scripture, especially those concerning symbolism and prophesies and laws in the Old Testament. There are graphs, charts, and summaries sprinkled throughout the book, along with detailed introductions to each book explaining the basics of what circumstances it was written under. In addition to all of this there are "Word Focus" sections that examine words in the original language that they were written in so that we can have better understanding of the English translation.

This Study Bible is written in such a way that it is great for both those who have known the Bible all their lives, and those who have never picked one up before but would like to.

I have bought five more of these Bibles since my first, for friends, and for myself as I love the commentary so much I have worn two Bibles out over this span. If I could give this six stars, I would- and if I had the money and ability to purchase one of these for every person who browsed this page, I would.

Buying this Study Bible is money well spent and with time invested in reading it you will gain a new and deeper understanding of God and his love for you.

Summary: This one was a blessing to me from God...
Review: I highly recommend this study bible. It really does have a lot of good information inside. Before I had bought it, I had been a little intimidated by standard (non-study) Bibles. This study bible, however, gives insightful commentaries(revelations), summaries, word translations, provides a much needed historical perspective across the Bible's 66 sub-books, and more. I have already bought a couple for my friends as gifts. I expect that it will bring them closer to God just as it has done for me. Amen.

Summary: Pleasantly Surprised!
Review: I was using an NRSV Life Application Bible, which I was pleased with, but wanted something with more depth to the comments. I looked over several study Bibles (Ryrie, New Oxford, NIV Study...), and felt the Nelson was the best by far. Cross refs. are relevant, and the on page comments are the best I've seen - they go into great depth and deal with the heart of the matter. The 200 page concordance is also a plus, as are other features. I wasn't sure about the NKJV (only choice), but took a closer look and am very pleased.

Summary: Excellent work
Review: I'm not a Christian but decided to purchase a bible to get this classic work under my belt. I wanted a study version though so I could get through the tougher parts without being baffled at the language or meanings. I purchased the Nelson version after reading many positive reviews and feel I made a great choice! Understandably, you need to be careful with study bibles in case you begin to adopt the editors' slant on things, but from what I can tell the Nelson team has done a fine job of retaining the integrity of the NKJV translation in their commentaries.

I'm still on the Old Testament (2 Kings right now) and I've throughly enjoyed most every single chapter so far. Thanks to the well-written and not-too-long commentaries on many verses it's easy to comprehend the significance of the passages and understand some of the ancient practices prevalent at the time.

Great maps in-text and at the back, helpful tables of dates and events, thorough cross-referencing, definitions of especially meaningful words in the Hebrew context, as well as in-text discussions of major concepts make this a definitive study bible for any NKJV reader and also as a reference work.
