Summary: Much-needed wakeup call
Review: Moreland sounds a wakeup call for the church to remember its scholarly heritage, and to shed the anti-intellectual attitude often present in the church. He begins with the biblical basis for developing a strong Christian mind, and for having a reasoned response when asked why we believe. Moreland then provides practical insights on ways for individuals to develop an understanding of apologetics and to gain a Christian perspective on one's vocation, and for churches to change to address these needs. I found the book to be very challenging, and I highly recommend it.

Summary: Good Introducion to Christian Thinking
Review: Moreland's thesis is that Evangelicals do not think, but that truly loving God requires us to use our heads as well as our hearts. He introduces the reader to some logic and makes points about cultural interaction. Overall a good introduction for Christian thinking. The writing is okay, not great, but good enough.

BTW - I find it odd when reviewers criticize a work as being poorly written, intellectually shoddy and full of caricatures when their reviews are...well...poorly written, intellectually shoddy and full of caricatures. Moreland's tone is, frankly, much more irenic.

Summary: Still An Intellectual Wannabe!!
Review: Often Christians are accused of not engaging their brains, unfortunately this criticism is often deserved. J.P. Moreland does an excellent job of showing the reader how to develop his Christian Mind. If you are an intellectual wannabe and have read James W. Sire's book 'Habits of the Mind', you'll also want to read this book which was written three years prior to Sire's book. I would suggest reading them both as they both compliment each other well.

Moreland takes 10 chapters divided into four sections to develop the concept of the mature Christian mind, a mind that loves God to the utmost. One special chapter of interest covers logic, a discipline that is lost on all but a few Christians, but crucial for developing a reasoned apologetic. In Section Three (chapters six through nine), Moreland describes how the Christian intellect is relevant in evangelism, apologetic reasoning, and worship within the church. I also enjoyed the final chapter which covers a plan for developing the Christian intellect within our churches.

I highly recommend this book and give it an 11 on a scale of 12. As I suggested previously I would also read Sire's book shortly before or after reading Moreland, depending on which you read first. Let us continually strive for the Mind of Christ!

Summary: The type of book I've always wanted to write
Review: One of the primary reasons we are now living in a post-Christian world is because the vast majority of 20th century Christians cared little or nothing about intellectually interacting with non-Christians. Hence, we have our modern stereotype of the ignorant, fundamentalist Christian who knows little about science, history, philosophy, or anything else related to academics. Unfortunately, this label is often deserved.

Thankfully, we have a new wave of Christian thinkers like J.P. Moreland who can intelligently interact with non-Christians in an attempt to demonstrate the truthfulness of Christianity. This book will go a long way toward equipping Christians to reverse the trend of anti-intellectualism in the 21st century.

Moreland explains why the mind really matters. God gave us brains for us to learn more about him and the world he created. Like a body that is out of shape from lack of exercise, so the mind weakens without use. We can strengthen our minds in order to make a difference in the world around us. Moreland argues persuasively that Christians can not truly make a difference in the world unless they are able to articulate their Christian worldview.

If you are worried that you're not a "smart" Christian, don't be concerned. With tools like this book, you can use the mind that God gave you to better understand him and to more effectively communicate your beliefs to those around you.

Summary: You are missing out if you have not read this
Review: Probably the best book I have ever read. Morgan shares a bit about the history of Christian thought, how the soul works, how the mind fits into logic and reason, and even dips into psychological issues. This is a great book for discussion! You'll feel smarter even after the first chapter.

Summary: SIMPLY EXCELLENT
Review: Simply an excellent book. This book convinced me of the importance of loving God with my mind and showed me practical steps I could take to do so. For example, it got me to cut down my TV watching and set goals for completing certain books withing certain periods of time. As a result, I have grown deeply in my knowledge of and hence love for God. I have also grown towards becoming the person he intends for me to be.

This book is a must read for every Christian today--especially in light of the huge problem of anti-intellectualism plaguing the church today.

Summary: Worthy reading for all Christians
Review: The book will motivate you do use your mind for God. It will even show you how in a practical way. The reader gets a history of how Christians lost their minds--it is a scandal indeed. You also get suggestions in how to develop the soul (yes, the soul exists), logical thinking basics, and a catalogue of references for further studies. I've read many texts concerning the intellectual life and the Christian and this one delivers the most in my opinion. If your faith is missing something and you don't know what, read this book and be challenged.

Summary: Amazing Book
Review: This book has really opened my eyes to the need to develop the Christian mind. It has also spurred me to start an active intellectual life with a new-found interest in apologetics!
