Summary: Beautifully written
Review: I think just about every Muslim, male or female, goes through somewhat of a religious identity crisis when he or she first starts questioning the religion they're born with. Most often, Islam is questioned in terms of fairness to women. I would recommend this book to anyone who is currently going through such issues. It cleared up a lot of issues for me when I was eighteen.

This book was great because it was very scholarly and rational.

Guys, be sure to buy this book. After reading it, it would be a perfect gift for your little sister.

Summary: I can't praise this book enough!
Review: Qur'an and Woman is an inspired, thought-provoking treatment of a very difficult topic. The book gives new hope to those who might have feared that commitment to Islam and commitment to gender equality were mutually exclusive. I can't wait to read Amina Wadud's next book.

Summary: A brilliant work of scholarly calibre
Review: Quran and Woman is an incredibly rich and resourceful book for anyone who wants a close, etymological study of the Quran and its conjectures on Women. It establishes with sufficient proof that gender equity was part of the Quran's mission.

Summary: Error
Review: The book is wonderful. Wadud's scholarship is excellent. How surprising, then, to find an error in the Arabic quotation on the important question of "The Origins of Humankind" (p. 17):

The verse that opens the section is romanized and translated as being chapter 4, verse 1. This is the famous "created from one soul" idea that can be seen to counter the idea that Adam/man is superior by virtue of being created first. But Wadud has conflated a portion of Qur'an 30:21 with 4:1. The real verse she intends (I think) to be discussing here begins by describing God as being "the One Who created you from one soul" not "and among His signs (is this)..."

People are literal about the Qur'an and they are careful about every word and vowel being correct. I wonder what happened here?

Summary: This book is wonderful!
Review: The sister evidently did a lot of research and she did alot of citing to prove her point. I am so pleased to see a well thought out arguement (in book style) for the rights of women. i have long said it is not islam that keeps us down but the men who misinterpret it to their own advantage!

Summary: A book for all believing Muslims
Review: This book is an excellent introduction to how believing Muslims read the Qur'an as an indictment, not a justification, of the oppression of women and privileging of men. It takes on all the well-known passages often cited as placing men above women, and reads them in context, relying on the meaning of the Arabic words, thereby showing that traditionalists have for centuries been playing fast and loose with the sacred text. What's more, this reading of the Qur'an is not something sister Amina dreamed up on her own: She draws on the work of many scholars who came before and disputes well and honestly with the traditional views. The only flaw in the book is the author's academic style, which makes hard work for the reader at times. Still, I think every Muslim who can handle college-level reading in English should be able to read this easily and with the greatest interest.

Summary: Excellent
Review: This book is fantastic! Wadud opens your eyes to a new way of looking at and understanding the Quran! Another good way to topple the idiotic patriarchy that is currently in charge.

Summary: A Must Read!
Review: This is a great book for everyone. For Non-Muslims it clears up such misguided notions of women in Islam that are found throughout the media. For Muslims, it truly gives a clear picture of the Qur'an's attitude toward women as equal contributors in all aspects of society. Wadud describes a position for women, which although may be contrasted by present day reality in many societies, is still the true vision for women in islam and the vision that as Muslims we must work towards.
