Summary: Creating More Confusion?
Review: While Mr. Akin deserves much praise for trying to bring back stability into the Catholic liturgy, he has completely failed to understand the root cause of the liturgical crisis and hence he fails to offer a useful solution. When the church embarked on its new course for the liturgy with The Novus Ordo Missal in 1971 she embraced the idea of an ever-changing, constantly renewing liturgy. While the liturgical norms like the GIRM contain many detailed instructions on the mass they also contain many loopholes like allowing for adaptations to certain cultures which give free reign to the most inventive of liturgists. Adding even more to the instability of the liturgy is the new 2000 GIRM which is close to being implemented. Is Mr. Akin going to issue an update to his book to correct all of the errors it will contain once the new GIRM is in place? Unfortunately, Mr. Akin has missed the forest for the trees. Anyone reading his book today is going to find themselves completetly confused a few years from now when the next set of changes to the liturgy issues forth from the Vatican and the US Bishops. If you want stability of worship I suggest you pass on this book and find a nice indult traditional mass.
