Summary: Keys to enlightment....
Review: I bought this book a few of years ago. I finished reading only the first three volumes. It was only this past month that I have been able to read the 4th to 6th volume ..hoping to have an understanding and perspective to the events of Sept ll...New York. This is a book that may help humanity to attain world peace and harmony.
The teachings of the Masters are valid and will make a difference in the most auspicious times...of humanity as we face the next few years....this book represents the panacea for world peace and I hope more people will find their way to this book.
I especially value Baird T. Spauldings, question and answers pages...I hope there will be more of his books...published..

Never in history of humanity that this book is appropriate and applicable in our circumstances of world today...the critical change is about to happen...and we all can make a difference when we learn to live according to the teachings of the Masters.

I am amazed that this Baird Spalding was born May 26, 1857. His writings and true to life experiences are timeless and if there is any thing that each one of us needs at this time ..is to experience his biography and teachings of the Masters of the Far East. As a Christian, and a bible student since i was 9 years old. I am bewildered why this book is not as popular. I recommend this to all sincere Christians...to read this book with an open heart and mind. It is the first book that I have read which finally answered an a question of what happened to Jesus after the ressurection and his meeting with his apostles...no history?

As a child, I have always wondered why so little was written in the bible about his life after his ressurection ...and why so many churches protray the image of "Jesus as death on the cross." It has taken 62 years of my life...to finally read a book by a man who was born in 1857...and this is the year 2001..!!!

B. Spalding's experiences "TESTIFIES" THE TEACHINGS IN "THE BIBLE"....and validates the "resurrection" of Jesus , the Christ, THAT HE LIVES!

Summary: Another Perspective
Review: In the early '80s I had for several years been a student of various spiritual teachings, including many concerning those who have variously been called the 'White Brotherhood', the 'Spiritual Hierarchy', and so on. These include great Himilayan masters, as well as other mysterious masters found throughout the world. Numerous reliable sources have stories and legends about them, including such books as 'Autobiography of a Yogi' (Babaji and others), and teachings from other traditions such as Theosophy, Sufism, Taoism and Tibetan Buddhism. So the concept of such masters was not unfamiliar to me. Thinking that the Spalding books must be another precious teaching about these masters, I tried to read these books (The Life and Teachings series). I found that I just couldn't get through them. I would tell myself that they purported to be about this great reality that I had faith in, so I must read these books also, but I couldn't get very far. I read fifty or a hundred pages here and there, also skimming most of the six books. They just didn't feel real.

Years later I was in a bookstore and I noticed a book called 'Baird T. Spalding as I Knew Him', by a long-time friend of Spalding's named David Bruton. In the books he seems to confirm my instinctual (intuitive?) reaction. He claims that Spalding fabricated the stories - completely. He says that Spalding inherited a journal from his grandfather who had traveled in India and the Himalayas, studying with various yogis (not the one's portrayed in the books, who Spalding invented). Upon inheriting this journal of teachings Spalding had received, he commented one day to his friend Bruton that he had conceived of an idea of how to make some money. He intended to make up a story that he personally had travel to Tibet, inventing the masters that he met, and had adventures through which he learned the kinds of teachings - teachings that he had actually received from his grandfather's journals (and undoubtedly embellished for dramatic effect - so we don't even really know what to believe in these books). After the first book came out, he was surprised by all the attention and invitations to lecture. The money was good, and there was much demand for more books. So he kept writing to meet the demand and got in over his head. I don't know if this story is true. Bruton claims that he waited until Spalding passed over because he had no interest in ruining Spalding's 'career', but that he did feel a responsibility to tell his knowledge of the true source of the books. As far as I was concerned, reading this account tended to make sense of the uneasy feelings I had about the books. They really don't have the ring of truth for me, and even less so now that 20 years later I have more reading and personal experience to draw on.

Recently I was reading in some of the extensive literature about the great Indian sage Ramana Maharshi. In this literature I came across a book (unfortunately I don't remember the title or author - although those interested could easily contact the Ramana Ashram and probably acquire the reference). One Westerner tells of his experience of living at the Ramana Ashram many decades ago when a group of Westerners led by Baird Spalding arrived at the ashram in India. Apparently, this group had followed Spalding to India to meet the masters who Spalding had written about, and whom Spalding claimed had telepathically guided him to bring to India. Many in his group had invested all their resources in this trip, being told by Spalding that they would not need money nor would they be returning home. Apparently they arrived at the Ramana Ashram in India after having traveled in India for many months, unable to make contact with Spalding's alleged teachers. Many of the group had become more and more disillusioned and disgruntled, and tension was mounting in the group. Spalding seemed confused and discouraged. Some of the members of the group found in Ramana a real master to believe in a chose to stay at the ashram, others left for Aurobindo's ashram, and so on until the group had fallen apart. The person telling this story felt sorry for Spalding. His impression was that he was a basically decent man who seemed to be very deluded. He concluded that he genuinely believed in his inner telepathic experiences, and was confused about why the trip had ended in failure. I believe his impression was that Spalding's life ended on this sad note.

Both of these accounts may be misguided or fabrications. In the second case I don't see what the motivation would be. The source simply (and rather compassionately) shared this account of happenings at the ashram in the context of numerous others. He said that he actually liked Spalding, in spite of his apparent delusion. In any case, do what you want with these stories. For me, the quality of these books never did seem anywhere near what I consider to be truly authentic teachings of real masters. But you might like to know that not only are these stories around, but these books are not embraced enthusiastically by many people (such as myself and many people I have met). Maybe I will have saved you the cost of the set (an expense I didn't manage to avoid!). Namaste.

Summary: God reveals it all in these books. No more mystery.
Review: I know these teachings to be true because I am living them. Because of my disbelief in death, I resisted dying, though I seemed to be doing just that. I was led to read these books. My body went through and is still going through the vibrations spoken of and I can see concrete evidence of my flesh turning from a material substance to a spiritual one. Words are inadequate for me to express my gratitude for these books. As a result of reading them and completely accepting the truths, I shall never see death. I intend to join Jesus and the Masters some day and help them with their work.

Summary: Imputrescible
Review: It is inconceivable to me that anyone could read this set of books through and remain unchanged. The clarity and profound, yet simple, truths conveyed leave no doubt as to the veracity of the text. Mr. Spalding could not possibly have conjured all of this up!

Everyone is free to think what they want even if those thoughts condemn a person to the life that most of us are raised to live. This point was brought out over and over again in this work. My favorite passage from the book is: "Their are not less than one hundred and thirty million(aproximate population of the U.S. in the 1880's) masters in the U.S. alone and further proof of this is that noone but a master could appear to be something he's not."

Summary: Truly Inspirational
Review: Having been raised as a Jehovah's Witness, Truth was a word that was beat into my head. But until I read these books the meaning of the word TRUTH never actually filled my heart or soul. These books answered questions that my subconscious knew needed to be answered, yet never knew how to ask. Jesus the man, the son of god, attained the 'Christ' status through the way he lived his life. A status that he came here to show US ALL how to achieve in this lifetime. God did not give to one what he did not give to all, and as children of god also, we can achieve this status as well. It is nice to know that we are not just mere servants to what most religions describe as a jealous, haughty, grudge holding God, attributes that would make a terrible 'man' let alone 'God'. The books are truly inspirational and I could never possibly do them justice.

Summary: Mixed Feelings - Baird T Spaulding the fabulist ?
Review: I have mixed feelings about these books. They are inspirational and full of wisdom and insight. But the author also claims that his experiences travelling in the Far East are true and this I find hard to believe because the accounts of his physical travels do not have the sense of reality or ring of truth one would expect from someone tavelling the mountain fastnesses of Tibet and the Himilayas. He seems to have no eye and concern for the magnificant physical beauty of these areas. The parties seem to effortlessly move from place to place and set up camp where all their needs are taken care of. Miraculous events happen, people appear out of nowhere. I have difficulty believing that any of this actually happened to Baird T. Spaulding. He seems to me to be a fabulist who is telling his tales with the purpose of attempting to free his readers from their limitations which is all well and good. I think maybe Carlos Casteneda did a better job later on both artistically and as a teacher, and personally I prefer the books of Godfre Rae King who wrote in a similar genre and which DID have the ring of truth and were truly inspired.

Summary: opened eyes
Review: From an early age I began my search for truth. I came from a strong religious background. In my twenties I became disatisfied with the teachings. I knew that there was more. In my search I came across "Masters of the Far east" or I should say the book found me. When I read the books they struck a chord deep within my soul that said this is what I have been looking for. This is the truth that the major religions do not teach. So simple and pure. These books changed my life. I highly recomend these books for those who are sincerely looking for truth.
