Rating: Summary: Dated, But Useful Historical Review Review: As many have said, it's a tad dated, but nonetheless is a helpful historical review of modern paganism for those of us new to the craft. Read it as a history rather than a review of common practice and you will get a lot of useful perspective.
Rating: Summary: Informative Review: Solid book with good information for those interested in modern day paganism. More of a historical approach that helps a person understand how we got to where we are. Great read.
Rating: Summary: One of the first 5 books every reader should get... Review: Drawing Down the Moon details Pagan practitioners in the United States in a scholastic and intelligent way without being dry. As many have mentioned, the Nordic Reconstructionism section is horrid, but a factor of bad sources, not bad writing. This is the book to give to a library, a parent who doesn't understand your religion or someone who freaks out. Some of the people in the book ARE freaky, but most are so down home and simple that it is plain to see it is a REAL collection of studies, not just those who shout loud.
Rating: Summary: excellent Review: As long as you rip the section on odinism out, this is a great book. We need a 2003 edition, though!
Rating: Summary: Excellent book...lots of historical information Review: As a solitary practitioner of Witchcraft, I found this book VERY useful. Though some items are dated (which is to be expected), I would recommend this as a necessity for any modern witch's extensive library. It takes a while to read, but well worth the effort. I only wish I could meet the author face to face and thank her for the extensive knowledge and wisdom revealed in these pages...
Rating: Summary: One of the best books on wicca Review: If you can take the long pages of the book you'll find it very hard to put down. The book is uplifting and very emotional. I truly love this book.
Rating: Summary: Good But Very Out-of-Date Review: I read this book when it was first published in 1979. I would've given it four stars then, but now this book is hopelessly out-of-date, which most reviewers fail to point out. The "revised" editon of 1997 only added an updated resource guide. Well, the entire book needs updating! I hope Ms. Adler will do so in the near future. So much has happened and changed in the last 25 years of modern paganism. This is still I very good book, but do keep in mind that it is now hardly a comprehensive overview of what Paganism is about in the year 2003. 1979, yes; but now?
Rating: Summary: Simply WONDERFUL Review: Margot Adler did an excellent job on this book. I am so glad that I got it and I have read it twice now (it's not often that you read a book twice; at least not for me). I love it and found it FULL of information. It is a must have for anyone interested in pagan religion at all.
Rating: Summary: NeoPagan Who's who Review: Excellent book for reference work, but I found it to be like reading an encyclopedia. That said, it is a GOOD encyclopedia. The articles on the various ritual traduitions are wonderful and very helpful to those who are trying to understand a trad without joining it. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Wicca, Goddess worship, or Neo/Paganism, whether it they are at the beginning of their interest or deep in the middle of it.
Rating: Summary: The best introduction to Wicca I know. Review: I was looking for a spiritual path that embraced body and will and sexual desire, instead of rejecting them, and lo and behold, when I read DRAWING DOWN THE MOON, I realized I was already a Wiccan. I learned what books I could read, and even found organizations and events where I could meet witches. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know the first thing about modern neo-pagan witchcraft.
