Rating: Summary: Helpful tonic for today's church goer. Review: The 16th century Reformation had an unbelievable impact upon all of Western culture and the world. At a time when the church was caught-up in supersition and corrupt views of salvaton by merit, God raised up Martin Luther to spearhead a recovery of the Biblical doctrine of justification by faith. Gerhard Forde's little book on Luther's Heidelberg Disputations is a must read for all who desire to better understand what was at stake both then and now. There is no more important question to ask then how can a person be reconciled to a holy God. Luther deeply wrestled with this question. This book with Forde's insightful comments will help the reader discover the answer. Forde's makes this great work by Luther reachable for the layman. Enjoy! Soli Deo Gloria.
Rating: Summary: No Wonder The Hype Of "The Passion Of Christ" Is So High! Review: The upcoming release of Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" sets the feel for where author, Gerhard Forde wishes the reader to go after reading this book. The theologian of the cross knows that it is the 'shock and awe' of the cross that roots the Christian into a true understanding of repentence. The works that we perform are as filthy rags. This book was a tough read, but once you became acclamated to its thesis and wording it became very interesting and useful.
Rating: Summary: A must-read for any Christian Review: While the title of this book might lead you to think that it will be a terribly dry academic dissertation, do not be deceived. It is wonderfully accessible. Forde leads the reader on a guided tour of Luther's classic confrontation of the Theologian of the Cross against the Theologian of Glory. In the process, he reveals that though we may not realize it, there is a theologian of glory in all of us that must be brought to heel before we can enter into a proper relationship with the God who provides all of our righteousness through Jesus Christ. My only complaint is that I would have like to have had the full text of Luther's proofs available, even if as an appendix. Forde quotes from them frequently, and no doubt presents the material in an easieer to understand manner, but I would have liked to have easy access to all the Luther had to say.
