Summary: Very Broad and Systematic in its Contents
Review: This book is a wonderful reference work/text on the Philosophy of Religion. It is edited by Eleonore Stump and Michael J. Murray. The text is broad in several ways. First, there are works represented from Medieval philosophers to Modern philosophers. Second, the work consists of seven parts, each part dealing with a particular issue, and within each part philosopher's works from many varying centuries are represented. Furthermore, there are articles which have appeared in the recent (last fifty years) philosophy journals. This makes for a very broad area of study. The seven parts include the nature of God, the existence of God, evil, Religious belief and its relation to reason, making sense of religious practices and doctrines, morality, and religious pluralism, gender, and ethnic diversity. Some of the authors works that have been included are Aquinas, Hasker, Rowe, Plantinga, van Inwagen, Hume, Hick, Stump, Al-Ghazali, Swinburne, McCord Adams, Pascal, Draper, Anselm, Kretzmann, Wolterstorff, etc. This is a great modern reference work and I have referred to it many times in my own studies. If you are wanting a great collection of twentieth century philosopher's works then this book is for you since it places an emphasis on such things and yet still includes works from centuries past.
