Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Very balanced commentary
Review: I believe this is the best single commentary on the Pastorals available for the busy pastor or inquiring layman. It combines fresh scholarship with practicality and anecdote. I personally used this in my "devotional time" to supplement my own reading and found it to be an insightful and stimulating companion. It is a good starting place for the beginner to get a basic handle on the textual "problems" of the Pastorals, including a helpful and concise summary of the debate over Pauline authorship (which Liefeld holds to).
I almost gave it four stars because I wished Liefeld would have pursued some tricky areas in a more in-depth way. This is not to say, however, that there are not places where he doesn't do that. At the same time, however, I can understand his reticence to overburden the reader with technicalities of syntax, grammar, etc.
