Rating: Summary: Sharp! Review: Despite its rather silly title, I've never had so much fun reading a commentary! I can't vouch for any of the other titles in this series (in fact, the others I've seen were pretty awful), but this one rises from the clichéd ashes of populist Bible books and delivers. Pinzon presents complex concepts with a witty one-two punch that makes his writing as enjoyable to read as a novel. Not only a good introduction to the Bible, but a refreshing review for those of us whose Bibles have gathered a little dust. I've been reading it to my kids on the long drive to church. Even when I think they're sleeping, they always wake up to answer the questions at the end of the chapter. (This book'll get to you, even comatose.) Lively and informative.
Rating: Summary: "A treasure chest of knowledge and wit" Review: I am a youth pastor at a Calvary Chapel and I want to teach the students about the Kingdom of God. So I pulled out the book of Mark and I am teaching through the entire book as every good Calvary Chapel pastor would. I have a few commentaries and I used them to do the introduction. I then looked into my book collection to see what else I could find that would be helpful - I found your book I got a while back. I pulled out a treasure chest of knowledge and wit in your book. As I prepare for the next section, it is now unnecessary to open all of the other commentaries I have, so it has come down to using yours, which uses a plethora of resources to bring the Word of God alive. The humor in your writing style perfectly fits my teaching style and it is a joy to "listen" to you speak these words to me as I read them. Thanks Scott!
Rating: Summary: I love this book! Review: I have been a pastor for over 18 years now and have had to wade through many a commentary. I can tell you that this one won't bog you down! It's clear and concise, yet deep, thoughtful and practical. If you have read any of Scott's other books you know he is a gifted writer. But now you can discover his greatest gift, teaching God's Word! You can tell that Scott Pinzon has really done his homework as explores the Gospel text. And in his "what others say" sections he tells you what many of the greatest Pastors and commentators have said about various passages. If your looking for a commentary that gets to the point yet stimulates your thinking, this is it. Where was this book when I was a youth pastor!?
Rating: Summary: A Fresh , User Friendly Commentary Review: I went to theological seminary 25 years ago. One of the reasons I went to seminary was to learn how to use the tools for studying the Bible. I took Greek and Hebrew and read lots of books with dense type. It wasn't easy for me but I am glad I spent the three years it took to acquire the tools. However, I recognize that most Christians, even if they were so inclinded, can afford neither the time nor the expense of Seminary. But they are interested in studying and knowing more about the Bible. This book on the Gospel of Mark will be helpful to such people. Persons who have never owned a commentary on an individual book of the Bible will find a wealth of information about the history, language and culture of the New Testament that will enable them to better understand the teachings of Jesus. The combination of good biblical scholarship along with the helpful tools, outstanding quotes and fresh, humorous writing makes this book very readable and accessible as a Bible Study resource.
Rating: Summary: You must read this book Review: This book is absolutely awesome and will open your eyes to the Gospel and Book of Mark like nothing you've read. Our Bible Study group all decided to take one chapter each out of the book, review it and present a study to the group. The comments from each presenter was the same........ IT WAS WONDERFUL ! I encourage every Bible teacher, student, lay person and Pastor to read this book. It is full of insight, humor and teachings that will bless you beyond belief. You must read this book !
Rating: Summary: A fellow seeker of deeper truths Review: Whether you are in professional ministry, a Bible Study leader, or an independent seeker of deeper truths, you will find Scott Pinzon's commentary of the book of Mark a valuable resource. Although the title suggests an audience of "Biblically-Inept" readers, Pinzon's words also provide depth and understanding for the spiritually mature. Early on Pinzon tells us the prominent place the book of Mark held for early Christians, as well as the importance it places on getting to know Jesus. He leads us closer to understanding Jesus through sections such as, "Celebrity Jesus," "Baffling Jesus," "Road Scholar Jesus," "Temple Terrorist Jesus," and "Passionate Jesus." In addition, Pinzon challenges the reader to dig deeper while providing easy and fun ways. Each chapter includes "What Others Say," Greek interpretations, "Power Tool[s]," "Something to Ponder," "Key Point[s]," and references to other Biblical sources. He also offers study questions for personal follow-up or group study. Five stars for this excellent work!!
