Rating: Summary: A touching novel Review: This book was about a friendship between 2 women who have had hardships in life. Margaret has had a troubled childhood and keeps herself at a distance from people, yet, Birdie sets out to befriend her and to share Christ with her. Birdie has had some troubling things in her past as well. This book shows how 2 different people deal with the things from their past and how the 2 women are bonded together in this way. The characters in this book are real and not too goody-goody. There is not a lot of excessive preaching, but how we show Christ's love by our actions. I highly recommend this book to anybody who has had troubled pasts, and just for anyone in general. The book will be well worth your money.
Rating: Summary: This is my review Review: This is my review of SWIMHI loved it and yet I felt the author went overboard in making Birdie breast-less and then dying that sudden death. As I was reading I felt a real "shock" when this happened and I felt a little strung along as a reader. Besides... don't we have enough real life tragedy without having it unnecessarily in our fiction reading. It was an over done development and an unnecessary one at that in my opinion. Birdie could have gone off to be a missionary in Africa or something. What a waste. Plus I have REAL issue with blaming everything that happens on God. I do not believe that at all. After all that criticism I would like to say that Ms. Turner is a stupendous writer. Her gift for words and storytelling is lovely and enriching. (most of the time) I loved Birdie (though she didn't have to be THAT homely) and the thaw and growth of Margaret was wonderfully captured and surprisingly understated ... unlike most writers who let all glory and amen show through. Though anyone suffering from the same fate as Margaret should read LOVING WHAT IS. It coudl have saved Margaret 35 years of her life.
Rating: Summary: Everyday people -- a powerful story Review: This was one of the best books I've ever read. While the main characters are everyday people, the author gradually and powerfully unfolds their story to let us see into their hearts. I found myself absorbed in every detail of this book, remembering all of the details well after finishing. The two central characters -- Birdie and Margaret -- are unforgettable. The writing style (the story is told by Margaret) is unique and greatly enhances the story. Unlike most novels, this one has stayed with me months after reading it and has been an inspiration to me to model Christ's love for others. I have recommended this book highly to others and given it as a gift to a few special Birdies in my life. Christians, if you don't read this, you are missing something special. Non-Christians will find a surprising example of an unshakable love for the unlovable.
