Summary: men who have walked with god, by sheldon cheney
Review: A followup to my previous review... The writing in the book is still wonderful but the publishing is of the worst quality. It looks like the 1945 hardcover book has been photocopied and black and white stats made of the illustrations (which were black and white photographs of fine art prints). Since I own a copy of the 1945 hardcover edition, I compared page by page, and it definitely does look just like a copy job. The cover is flimsy and unattractive. I was actually wondering if it was legally published or stolen, but I don't know how to find out. The star I gave it was for the writing, not the publishing! What a shame to put out such a pitiful edition of a beautiful book.

Review: I can't speak to the publishing, as a previous critic has, but I have two HB copies from the early 50s and love it. It is a collection of short biographies of mystics from pre-Christian times to near present. While not in itself inspirational, it does a good job of providing insights into how these individuals may have "chosen" mysticism-insights that one could incorporate into his or her own spiritual life.

It focuses primarily on male Christian mystics, perhaps to the exclusion of some females and "non-Christians" that may have been even better subjects. However, it covers its subjects well.

As far as I can tell it is the only spiritual book Cheney wrote-his others are about art and theater.

Review: This is a classic book by a prominent theatre and arts historian who also seems to have had an interest in, and insight into, the mystical life. I bought a second-hand copy 25 years ago and it has stayed in my library while countless books have come and gone. Finding it in print, I am buying a copy for a friend.
