Rating: Summary: Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord... Review: Anddrew Murray writes with the simplicity and love of a pastor, without soft-soaping or sugar-coating the truth. His abandonment and love for Christ is evident in all of his works and, therefore, qualifies him, in my opinion, to write a book on humility. You can tell he has experienced humility and that it is not just an intellectual excercise. The one thing I took away from this book is that humility is indeed an experience; you can hear about the need to be humble, read, and even study about it. But unless the Spirit makes humility real personally to the individual, it is possible to become haughty about the need for being humble. Andrew Murray's works have added so much to my Christian life; I feel closer to G-d because of the things he has written.
Rating: Summary: must read for every christians Review: Andrew Murray seems to capture the essence of what it means to be a Christian, and this book is no different. This a beautiful treatise on the subject of Humility, and Murray offers specific directions for believers, from Scripture, whereby we may be transformed and conformed to the image of Christ. I loved it, and I'm sure you will, too.
Rating: Summary: Dying To Self, Living To God Review: Have you ever been called selfish? Have you ever felt sore from being reprimanded by your boss? If so, Andrew Murray's short book Humility can help you out. This well written book is primarily for believing Christians, but it is appropriate for anyone for whom the above questions resonant. This primer explains the simple virtue of humility from the Bible, with a fundamental focus on Jesus Christ. The author writes that Jesus Christ is the perfect model of humility. Jesus' modest birth, short life, and dramatic death all strikingly demonstrate His humility. In that, Christ being God incarnate did humble Himself in the service of others during His earthly life. The book challenges the Christian reader to follow the sublime example of Jesus Christ in humility. This quality is described as total dependence on God in Christ, self-denial, and is contrary to pride and conceit. Also, it is a gateway to spiritual growth or a primary virtue. Murray explains that it is the Christian's responsibility to empty oneself of conceit and pride and to be filled up with the blessings of God. One such blessing is that the character free from pride and conceit is strong enough to take personal reprimands. This reviewer found the heavy use of " death to self " language uncomfortable. However, I felt good about the book for it gave me great hope for personal spiritual growth in the down to earth virtue of humility.
Rating: Summary: must read for every christians Review: He defines humility in biblical light. So awesome. short reading, but yet, so profound. MUST READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Very worthwhile read!! Review: Highly recommended. It will change your concept about the virtue of humility.
Rating: Summary: Good Things DO come in small packages!!! Review: I am an avid reader, especially of books that will help me to grow in my walk with Christ. I would have to say that this book, was without a doubt, one of the most powerful books I have ever read......if not THE MOST powerful. It is a life-changing book that should be read by EVERY Christian who longs to live a godly, Spirit-filled life.
Rating: Summary: HUMILITY WILL TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE Review: I have been reading and rereading this book for about fifteen years. The author has given us a glimpse of what true holiness is and how to obtain it...seeing the humility of Jesus. As we look into the dying face that deserved to stand up for His rights (since He was without sin), yet gave up His rights, we WILL be transformed into His image. His was the face that did not retaliate when He was insulted, and made no threat to get even, and asked His Father to forgive his tormentors!! One of my favorite passages of the book is where Murray gives the picture of water rushing to the lowest places first. The lower we are before the Lord, the more receptive to receive his divine glory!!!!
Rating: Summary: Humility - the most neglected trait of Christ-likedness Review: In this little book of his meditations, Andrew Murray brings out by God's Word how humility is defined, how humility can be attained, and how humility is oh so needed today. After reading it, I received a more clearer understanding scripturally on humility. I thought I had an idea about this subject, but that's all I had -- an idea. This little book spurred me into God's Word to seek out Christ as my Example. I truly believe this book can be a help to anyone who desires to have a closer walk with the Lord, and also has a desire just to be a servant for Him.
Rating: Summary: Possibly the Best Book Ever Written on Humility Review: This book is a must read for every Christian. I have never read a book which so accurately defines Biblical humility. Murray shows how humility is a mindset and lifestyle, not a feeling. Humility is the one-word definition of every Christian's life--or it should be. Humility is the one-word description of all Christ was and is and of how He lived as our example to follow. The most amazing truth in this book is that which speaks of humility being a quality not resulting from sin, but from grace (God working within the believer). Jesus was perfect in humility, yet He never sinned. Humility was required on the part of the Son of God in Heaven before He ever became incarnate, so humility is a heavenly, Godlike quality. We need not sin to be humble; we need to be like Jesus as found in Mark 10:45 to be humble. In other words, for a Christian to be perfectly humble, he/she must be the greatest servant, not the greatest sinner. And if one could be totally sinless in this life, he/she would be perfectly humble. This book is too short, too low in cost, and too easy to read (though challenging in virtually every sentence) for any Christian to have an excuse not to read it.
