Summary: Wonderful!
Review: I first purchased this book 10 years ago under the title, " The Spiritual Seeker's Guide". Once I found what I was searching for, I sold the book at a yard sale. Since then I have purchased two more copies for a friend and a family member, because I told them how informative this was in giving basic beliefs and histories to the many different religions. Now I am buying a third copy to keep for myself, in case I should ever want to lend it out. I had difficultly tracking this down.. the author has since updated the material, and changed the title of the book. This is great for plain & simple basics.

Summary: Unreliable
Review: I purchased this today and am returning it. On even a quick review through the book, I'm seeing misspellings and inaccuracies, such as "Septugant". There are also strange omissions. For example, in the section on Jehovah's Witnesses, it lists the JW's opposition to celebration of birthdays and some holidays, yet it fails to make any mention whatsoever of the major issue of their opposition to blood transfusions. In the section about Baptists, the author states that Baptists have traditionally been independent of each other. It lists several baptist organizations but fails to make any mention of the Southern Baptist Convention, which a great many baptist churches are affiliated with.

From these most basic ommissions and errors, I can see I cannot trust the thoroughness or accuracy of this book. The author also does not have any credentials in comparative religion, but is described as "the author of several books and tapes on yoga and meditation and a frequent speaker...". The back cover says 20 years was spent researching and writing this book. I find that hard to believe considering the errors and ommisions. I want a reference book to be reliable, and this one is not, in my opinion.

Summary: One of my most favorite resources!
Review: This book is NOT the most definitive guides to the world's religions and faith traditions, but it gives a great cursory overview (with resources for further study) for a great many of them. I use this book in conjunction with "A Sourcebook of the World's Religions" by Joel Beversluis frequently. If you are looking for indepth theological information, this may not be the book for you....however, if you are searching or shopping for faith or are interested in interfaith/inter-religious issues, by all means, this book is recommend without reservation. Highly recommended for students of comparative religion, cultural anthropology, and related subjects.

Summary: A REFRESHING LOOK AT THE MANY PATHS TO GOD
Review: This is a refreshing, unbiased, objective source of information about all religions. In addition to his extensive factual research, Mr. Sadleir indicates that he attended and participated in activities of all these religions, and actually spent time with the leaders and and members of each congregation so that he could write about them accurately. This is what I like most about this book; it contains no hearsay nor innuendo. Look through the pages and find what suits you best. As the founder of the Self Awareness Institute in California, Mr Sadleir has done a lot of work so readers can exercise their right of choice and experience the joy of spiritual freedom. Concise brief chapters share the history, belief systems, practices, location, leaders, addresses, phone numbers, and web sites of each religion. Highly recommended!
