Summary: left me uneasy...
Review: This book was written in an ethnographic style, which left me feeling very uneasy with the American author's obvious cultural hang-ups and assumptions. (I notice that anthropology is not amongst her qualifications.) I would certainly not rely on this book as the last word on the subject of Voodoo, or the places she visits. However despite the ethnocentrism and egocentrism it was still quite an interesting book. It will be interesting to compare it with other books on African spirituality.

Summary: Captivating Read/ Fascinating Story
Review: When I read non fiction I look for the author to show me the their truth. When someone writes a memoir or a personal account, adventure, rite of passage, trial by fire experience or even a daily journal entry, they must have a need and a calling to express their truth or the work is rendered pointless.
Personal truth is what grabs the reader and pulls their eyes to the memoir. Not every written experience is relatable to every reader.
But human truth and the clear expression of the unfolding of our lives, no matter our economic or racial background, is what makes great story telling relatable to any individual. It is not the literal story, the argument of facts, the chronological time, etc that makes the tale gripping. It is the metaphor. Sharon Caulder is all about metaphor. She has a direct, non pretentious, immediate voice that grabs the reader and bellows "This is a story!"
I can only advise you - read the book. You don't need to read another review.
I am honored she shared her story in such a truthful, playful, articulate manner. I am moved and astounded by her courage and her good will. And I am left musing and imagining all the stories, secrets and information that never made it to the page.
