Summary: Excellent, informative and well reasearched
Review: I do not normally read books of this genre, however, due to recent world events I thought it would be a great read as well as a way to familiarize myself with all that is going on. The author did a fantastic job of describing very scientific and complex terms and theories in such a way that I was able to grasp each concept extraordinarily well. The book is a page turner from start-to-finish! I highly recommend DOOMSDAY; it is well researched, exciting, and informative. It is also a great read for those who are unfamiliar with scientific terminology.

Summary: Awesome
Review: I rarely read non-fiction, but read this book because I've read this author's previous four novels.

Whoa. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat. It is incredibly scary because everything the author writes about could really happen. And concepts that are normally difficult for me to grasp were made understandable.

Whoa again. Come on, Mr. Moran, write another novel!

Summary: Exploitation at it's worst
Review: This book completely exploits people's fears to make a dollar. The problem with the book isn't whether or not the scenarios are valid or not (although there is a valid debate to be had there). It's that the scenarios aren't put in perspective. As far as I am concerned, this problem pretty much negates the validity of the who thing.

It's the equivalent of telling an agoraphobe about all of the ways they could be mugged while going to the grocery store. Could it happen? Yes. Is it likely? No. Are you doing them a favor? Certainly not. Mr. Moran isn't doing the public any favors either.

Summary: Excellent Read!
Review: This book is a farrago of errors, misrepresentations and exaggerated cries of alarm. It would take another book to correct all the nonsense, so a single example will have to do.

It is true, as Mr Moran says, that a large asteroid impact could at any time exterminate much of the life on this planet. As he also mentions, such extinction events are rare, occurring about once in every 50 million years. What he fails to note is that the chance of such an impact within the present century is therefore very small.

By 2100, our species will be exploiting the valuable resources offered by asteroids, and every one of any size will belong to some Belter rockhound, who will adjust its orbit to make sure he or she doesn't lose it to planetary impact. If we can make it through this century, the rampant human greed and capitalist exploitation that Mr Moran deplores will have made asteroid impacts an obsolete threat.

We will however face continuing danger from parabolic comets --i.e., those comets that round the sun but once, and then head off into the gulf between the stars. We cannot predict their appearances, and therefore cannot deflect them until they are already headed our way. No doubt there are fewer such comets than asteroids crossing our orbit each year, but they will remain a danger until our civilization extends all the way out to the Oort clouds, from whence they come. Mr Moran does not mention comets at all.

...Mr Moran has also written a couple of novels. I suggest that he stick to science fiction, since he has so little grasp of science fact.

Summary: Very Scary, and a Wonderful Read!
Review: This book was a true page turner, and I literally did not put it down until I had read it from cover to cover. Most of the subjects interested me, but ALL of the various scenarios scared me, but did so in a way that made me think, and it was exactly the type of book I was looking for. More importantly, I believe I learned from it, because it was written in a way that allowed me to easily understand some complex subjects.

Although I am not as well versed in some of the subjects that the author obviously is, I found the subjects that I do have some knowledge about to have been very thoroughly researched.

If you're looking for a book that will keep you turning the pages, keep you entertained, and leave you with some added knowledge of subjects, such as Cyberterrorism and Bioengineering and natural catastrophes, such as Volcanic Eruptions and Tsunamis, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!

Summary: Scary... Yet Plausable.
Review: This is an excellent book. Well written and about a topic that will definitely keep you turning the pages. Each chapter is about a separate "catastrophe" and begins with a quick 2-3 page hypothetical situation. The chapter then goes into explaining the cold, hard facts and research behind the scenario in depth. From Cyberattacks to Ebola to Nuclear exchanges, it's in here.

I'll be honest with you as well... Unless you have a gut-of-steel, this information will make you uneasy, and will most likely frightening you. And, what makes it so scary is how it's simply based on real research and rock-solid facts. You read these scenarios, and you think, "Wow... That could actually happen."

Otherwise, enjoy the book for what it is: Information. Because, after all, you can never have too much knowledge.

Summary: Exploitation at it's worst
Review: This is the first real pager-turner ever written in the genre of non-fiction, science-based books. Mr. Moran lays out ten exciting scenarios that could one day lead to the extinction of humankind: Weapons of Mass Destruction, Asteroid Impacts with Earth, Massive Volcanic Eruptions, The Greenhouse Effect, The Coming Ice Age, Mega-Tsunamis, Plagues, Cyberterrorism, Insect Invasions, and Bioengineering Blunders.

One of Mr. Moran's predictions has already been proven possible; in the "Weapons of Mass Destruction" chapter, he discusses the possibility that other countries may, in the very near future, use chemical, biological and/or other WMD against the United States. With a potential war on the horizon, this possibility has become a glaring threat we may have to face in months, or even weeks.

I found DOOMSDAY to be extremely well researched. Mr. Moran knows his stuff, and he explained terms and concepts a hundred times better than even my favorite college professors. I recommend DOOMSDAY to all interested in learning more about the dangers we may face both today, and in the future. Just because there is a very slim chance that an event should take place, does not mean it still does not pose a violent, and horrifying threat to all of humankind.
