Rating: Summary: An excellent book you don't need to buy. Review: This is a marvelous collection of essays. The final essay by David Bentley Hart is among the finest studies of any patristic author I've seen. All in all, worth your time. There's only one problem: you don't need to buy this $30 book to enjoy these essays. In fact, I have closely read all of them without ever seeing this volume. What you have here is the October 2002 (Vol. 18 Issue 4) issue of the journal Modern Theology, repackaged as a book. Now, a subscription to both the print and online versions of the journal costs only about $50, while back individual issues aren't too expensive, and if there's a decent library near you, chances are you can just pop over and read the thing right there. So you see, this is a most fine book, full of wit and learning, and required reading for anyone interested in all sorts of things, from modern Trinitarian debates in every communion to Orthodox asceticism and mysticism. You can also learn a great deal about what it simply means to be a good scholar writing good prose. It's just a crime to pay $30 for it as a book.
