Rating: Summary: STOP EVERYTHING TIL YOU READ THIS BOOK Review: WOW!!!!!!! I had to sit down at the computer & send Stacey a note when I finished the book. I think she has great insight as to what ALL women go thru in the dating scene now days. The book helped me to understand the whole men - women relationship thing. I have even gone out & purchased the "Mars/Venus" books. My girlfriend was reading that while I was reading Inappropriate men, we would read to each other several times a day!
It was also great to see a book that I could relate to on a personal level as well, I too, struggle with my weight, & feeling attractive at my size, something I have come to terms with over the last year & the book shed even more wisdom on. Thank you Stacey, if was a great read for my 40th year celebration.
Rating: Summary: Writing was good but the storyline was so-so Review: "Inappropriate Men" by Stacey Ballis deals with the life of Sidney, a size 24, incredibly sexual and intelligent woman who was having problems with her marriage. Shortly, she started having an affair with Geoff, a married man himself who is 23 years older than Sidney and is also her father's partner in a law firm. Her relationship with Geoff was different as it was mostly sexual (he didn't stay overnight, can't be seen in public together, etc) and soon Sidney realized that she was falling in love with him. In the meantime, there were other men who were interested in Sidney.I didn't enjoy "Appropriate Men" as about three quarters of the book deals with Sidney's relationship with Geoff and by then I was getting bored. It is hard to be "into" the book as the main story is Sidney's relationship with Geoff, which is going nowhere. In addition, it is hard for me to like Sidney as she seems to be an intelligent character and yet she was willing to put her life on hold for an unattainable man. In addition, the book does not have any strong secondary characters (which would make the book livelier) as the author seems to focus entirely on Sidney. This is definitely not your average Red Dress Ink book as this book deals mostly with infidelity unlike others. I think there are definitely better chick lits out there.
Rating: Summary: CAN YOU SAY CRAP! Review: "Inappropriate Men" by Stacey Ballis has to be one the worst books that I ever read. Sidney Stein is a woman who cheat on her husband with a married man(does seem to bother much) writes poetry about it (Which the writer's puts into the book) I don't know how its ends because I couldn't see myself finishing it. Red Dress Ink really allowed a bad book to be on the market.
Rating: Summary: Real Life Review: "Inappropriate Men" is fantastic, refreshing, different, funny and real! I,and sure countless others, can personally relate to some of the issues brought up...sometimes I could not help but think - "this is just like my life". You'll laugh, you'll cry and when you're finished reading this book, you'll want to read it again!
Rating: Summary: Ever laugh so hard you dropped the book? Review: 'Cause lemme tell you, I did that several times while reading this one. And when I wasn't dropping the book, I was dropping my jaw at the guts of both the main character and the writer. I love that the heroine is vulnerable, and still able to kick a little ass when necessary...I love that she writes poetry and cooks and buys little tables and does all those little things we all do, things that take a character from just a fictional creation to someone you wish you could hang out with (and I mean that less in a "How come strong-but-silent-brooding-heroes only exist in romance novels?" way, and more in a "Damn, what a cool girl!" way). The plotline is great, the writing sophisticated but not stilted, the ending is deliciously ambiguous (maybe a sequel?), and the characters (obviously) are human and irresistible. This is a fun, worthwhile, substantial book, and anybody who doesn't read it and fall in love instantly is crazy. Or has bad taste. Or both.
Rating: Summary: True to Life Review: An unbelievable believable story. You will laugh out loud, while thinking, yep that sounds like me. Reading it was like hearing yourself talk and seeing yourself in a mirror. I loved it and passed it on to several friends who have said the same thing. A crackup from beginning to end. So real, it's almost scary. We look forward to Stacey's next book.
Rating: Summary: The thinking woman's Chick Lit Review: At long long last, someone finally wrote a 'chick lit' book with not just a heart and soul, but a BRAIN. The usual cliche's are pleasantly absent...this girl doesn't live in NY, work for a magazine, or obsess about Manolo Blahnik. The things we love about chick lit, however, are here in abundance. Sidney Stein is as real a character as I have read in a long time. She is intelligent, but still falls prey to less-than-smart human mistakes. She is confident, but not without normal insecurities. She makes you feel like you have met a new friend, someone willing to be totally open and honest with you, someone who makes you laugh, but also makes you think. Sidney's relationships comprise the Good the Bad and the Ugly, and the way Ballis writes about them, you get the sense that this is an author with a profound observation of life. She has watched and listened, and now has taken the time to share her insights with the rest of us. Yes, the book may pose some problems for the chick litters who lean towards the fluffier stuff. Ballis doesn't care about challenging you, she sets the literary bar very high for her readers. This isn't dumbed down, pre-chewed stuff. This is meaty writing, and requires a decent attention span. For all the possible twenty-something readers, tackle this one with the head of a pupil, thirty-something Sidney has many lessons to give you. For the thirty- and forty-something readers, you will be pleasantly surprised to find a book in this genre that speaks to you and your lives so eloquently. Lucky for us, in spite of the occasional foray into serious stuff, Ballis never loses her sense of humor. This book is laugh till you wet your pants funny. Whatever your summer plans, include Inappropriate Men on your list of must-reads.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put this book down!! Review: Best read I have had in a long time. I couldn't wait to pass it on to my girlfriend so she could read also.
Sidney's story kept me wrapped up in this book until I hit the last page... I just couldn't put it down.
Stacey Ballis is a great writer & I can't wait until her next book comes out.
Rating: Summary: A refreshing read! Review: From the unapologetically fat (she's gorgeous, ... she doesn't have to apologize) lead character of Sidney Stein to the unexpected writing style, (Backstories, asides, poetry, recipes) Stacey Ballis has crafted an exuberant tale of starting over. Even if it is with the wrong man (men). Even if the starting over began before the preceding act was completely over. It's this very lack of convention that makes INAPPROPRIATE MEN such a tremendous read. Drink alert-- this is one of those books where you might find yourself snorting Diet Coke through you nose and as you choke back laughter.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Book!!! Review: Great fun!! I loved this book. It's funny, sad, poignant and true to life. I could relate to all the emotions Sidney experienced.
