Summary: Good, but not her usual standard...
Review: ...but not the last! This book was, without a doubt, one of the best books I've picked up in a long time. The characters, especially the heroine, Reyna, and the hero, Ian, are well-written, fleshed-out characters. And the secondary characters add alot to the story. I couldn't put this book down until I finished it. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Review: Easy on the eyes but nothing like the glowing reviews of this book. The characters are stiff and the dialogue cartoonish. Come on people get real...if you want to post a review of a book at least make it an honest one!

Summary: Good but not great
Review: I agree with Nicole, if this were anyone else, it would get five stars, but Hunter has done so much better and been so much more creative in the past. That said, it's one to keep, but not to cherish. It lacks the originality of her earlier works.

Summary: Twists, Turns and Great Romance
Review: I am still so grateful that I picked up this authors body of work, she is definitely a star on the rise. I loved this book that had a bit of everything thrown into it - even some comedic touches as well!
It starts out grabbing your interest from the very first pages, whith Lady Reyna Graham, disguised as a courtesan, passing behind enemy lines with a desperate plan to save her people. She meets up with Ian of Guilford, the epitome of a lady's man for his era and is dizzy from his breathtaking handsomeness!
You can read the other reviews for more of the story, but I must say that this latest offering had a bit of everything.

If you've read the other books in this series, you will be reintroduced to David and Christina (By Arrangement), and Morvan and Anna (The Protector) - The three females form a wonderful bond. There are mysteries galore, hot sensual scenes, and wonderful historical background. All in all a wonderful addition to this this authors series of novels. A definite keeper with the rest.

Summary: Good book, though not the best of Ms. Hunter
Review: I can't tell if I liked this story or not. I loved the preceding four books and think I liked this book only because I was waiting to read it. If I had picked this one up without reading the others, (By Design, By Arrangement, The Protector and By Possession) I do not think I would have enjoyed it quite as much. We see the characters from the other books and actually continue the story of the retaking of Harclow for Morvan. I really enjoyed seeing "the gang" and often complain about other authors where we never see characters from other stories. Unfortunately, I think it would be a bit confusing if you have not read their stories first.

That said, I thought the writing was well done and enjoyable to read. Our characters are deep, with complex histories. The building of the story and how the plots intertwined was exciting and kept my interest keen. I was glad that Morvan finally regains his birthright (as we knew he would), but I was a bit disappointed in how it effects the other people in the story.

I have always loved how Ms. Hunter brings the past to life. She uses history and makes it seem, as the reader, that you were right in the thick of the action. I guess that is where my reservations of this book come from. There was little history and descriptive passages of everyday life which was evident in her other stories. Much of this book takes place during war and sieges in 14th century England, yet instead of feeling like I was a participant in the battles, I felt like most every other book I have read, like an outside observer. Lord of a Thousand Nights is still an excellent book, just not what I have come to expect from Ms. Hunter.

Summary: Good book, but read in sequence.
Review: I enjoyed this book, but readers should be aware that Ms. Hunter collects characters as she goes from book to book. Therefore, I would advise reading them in order.

Summary: Good, but not her usual standard...
Review: I read and buy Madeline Hunter (hot off the shelf) because of her elegant writing style, her vivid primary and secondary characters, her attention to historical detail, and above all, the feeling that "I'm there, in the Middle Ages". And yes, I like a good romance, and lots of luscious love-making thrown into the mix.

While this book stands above the usual crop of medieval, I do not frankly think this to be her best work. It began promisingly with Lady Reyna Graham setting out to re-enact Judith and Holofernes. It ended with a whimper, oh, with the usual happy ending, but I could care less about Ian and Reyna at that point. Why? Perhaps it is the fact that the story line is a bit more cliched than the normal Hunter plot. Perhaps it is the fact that I never really saw Ian in the process of being redeemed from that ridiculous title he wears. Perhaps it is the attitude of Reyna herself.

My personal feeling is that her three best books so far are her three first books - By Arrangement, By Possession, and By Design (where Bk 2 is actually the first chronologically). With Bk 4 - The Protector - Hunter's stories become more independent of what is happening around her protagonists, which I consider to be not so good. [If you could care less about the history, you won't mind that]. Book 5 employs even less historical detail - which reign, what is happening, what is the situation with the Templars - and you could almost be set in any generic medieval period.

Read if you are addicted to the entire series, or if you want to read someone who is a very very good writer (technically). I almost wish I had skipped this book.

Reyna and Morvan are the perfect pair and they would not be forgotten. With the action, adventure political intrigue, they make this book for what it is "A keeper and the perfect gift to any true historical romance reader. Thanks Madeline Hunter and looking forward to your other books.
