Rating: Summary: Believable treatment of reincarnation Review: The jacket and cover are exquisite and an enticing prelude to an enjoyable and straightforward treatment of reincarnation that will give an accurate view of how past lives and karma work. Definitely worth reading although the characterizations are sometimes not quite as compelling as I would have liked and anyone very familiar with reincarnation will find the ending predictable.
Rating: Summary: Compelling, thought-provoking view of history Review: The words on the back of the novel to the effort that you wouldn't get much sleep while reading this novel proved to apt. Slightly condescending husband Mike's dry, book-derived view of history (he is a slightly pompous lecturer in English history) is contrasted wonderfully with Ferney's countryman's view of history as experience, direct or related. The tension between these two kept the book humming along, although I couldn't believe fully in (couldn't *feel*) the closeness between Ferney and Gally. We had to just take this on trust. This troubled me more than a little, as I struggled to believe in a relationship that could somehow last 1,300 years and remain fresh. There must have been a special dimension in this relationship, but although the author tries to describe it several times, he never quite succeeds. But being churlish. One of the most enjoyable reads for, well, years. Uplifting, a *big* book with nice contrast between modern life and history. And yes, we are just four or five full back-to-back lifetimes from Shakespearean England. Read and enjoy,. - Vaughan (I've already requested my next James Long book from the library.)
Rating: Summary: A haunting novel of eternal love... Review: This book captured my imagination and I could not put it down. It has many different elements including romance, history, reincarnation, mystery, etc. I was captivated and you will be too. Buy this book... you won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: ENTHRALLING, INSIGHTFUL, HISTORICALLY ILLUMINATING! Review: This brilliantly written book is about a young woman who has had much tradegy in her life. She suffers from severe anxiety attacks and nightmares. Gally moves, with her husband, to an ancient cottage in the English countryside that somehow sooths her soul. She meets an elderly man,Ferney, with whom she has an instant and uncanny emotional connection. Ultimately she discovers that they have shared many past lives together and these lives relate directly to her current mental condition. Ferney teaches her how to remember their past so she can find peace in her current life. This story line is interesting, but what really made this book impossible to put down was Long's interweaving of minute and very human details into historical events. Incredibly well researched, Long provides us with a very human point of view and challenges us to view the historical facts we have been taught in a different way. This review does not do the book nor the author justice. For those who enjoy Susanna Kearsley or Barbara Eskine, this book is a MUST. For those that think they are well informed British historians, this book is can not be missed.

Rating: Summary: Fantastic and quick read Review: This is a great book! Interesting characters, a somewhat different view of reincarnation, moral dilemmas, and an ending that leaves you pondering the possibilities. And don't let the cover or the comparisons scare you--this is not a romance novel, this is a wonderful work of fiction.
Rating: Summary: stuck in my imagination Review: Wow! This is a beautiful novel that ended way too quickly! It has a fantastic sense of scenery and historical detail. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because, like another reviewer, I didn't feel the passion between Gally and Ferney. It was written, but it didn't carry across to me. I would also loved to have read more about Gally's lives, including the missing years in which she can't remember. I loved the ending, even though I could predict it, and will no doubt spend time wondering what Gally would have done next. But all in all, a great read, and I look forward to reading more from this author.
