Summary: Difficult to finish
Review: I bought this book based on the reviews of others who had read it. I found it somewhat boring and the characters uninteresting. I usually like strong female characters, but not this one. I did not like the relationship that she had with her family and the surrounding story was uninteresting as well. I would not recommend this book and would only read another book by this author from the library!

Summary: a good book
Review: I have now read two of Haywood Smith's book and have enjoyed both. This one is set in Scotland in the ninth century. The heroine is a stubborn, warrior trained woman named Bera. She is the youngest of 13 children, and the only girl. She lost her mother at age 14 so she has been raised by her loving if not over protective brothers. She can fight her way out of any situation but also has the skills of a weaver. Nine of her brothers have been taken hostage by a neighboring Scot and she must go to save them. The brothers that are left behind have decided her fate and have made a pledge that if anyone can save the nine that they may have Bera's hand in marriage. She doesn't like this idea but agrees with it.

The hero is Curran, a mysterious Dark Warrior who has decided to take the up the cause of freeing the nine and marrying Bera. He is at the castle where the nine are being held and secretly helping them. He soon finds out Bera's identity and requests her hand in exchange for his help, she agrees. Together they must struggle to free her brothers, find a spy and overcome both of thier pasts. It is a touching story with some very humors areas. I really enjoyed it.

Summary: Action packed rescue mission with romance
Review: I really enjoyed this book. When 9 of her older brothers are captured by their local enemy (Lord Drust) our herione, Princess Bera, disguises herself as the mysteriously cloaked "Weaver," come to weave an elaborate, gloriously woven cloak for Drust's wife, Princess Dierdre. Meanwhile, Bera's other 3 brothers have offered a prize to whomever can rescue their brothers from Drust's clutches - the prize being Bera's hand in marriage. Bera is determined to rescue them herself rather than be forced into a marriage with any mercenary who takes up the challenge.

Meanwhile, back at Drust's castle, the notorious mercenary "The Dark Warrior"(aka Curran, our Hero) has been hired to train Drust's men. However, this Dark Warrior has a mission of his own - he plans to rescue the brothers and claim Bera as his prize. Born a slave, Curran's life goal has been to achieve a higher place in life. He almost immediately senses that the "Weaver" is not who she claims to be and sets out to find out her true identity. Bera has finally met her match in Curran and the two team up to rescue the brothers. Bera fights her feelings for Curran throughout the book - despite everything he does to help save her brothers, she still has a hard time trusting him due to abuses in her past and also his connection to Drust's wife, Princess Dierdre. Furthermore, things get complicated when Bera discovers that one of her brothers has fallen for Dierdre. Bera is unsure whether Dierdre is trustworthy or not, and she worries that Curran is secretly in league with her.

While I enjoyed the story very much, there were some parts that seemed contradictory (such as Drust's complete change in personality half-way through the book) and I also didn't quite feel as drawn into the developing relationship between Curran and Bera as I expected. There is a sexual attraction between them and a sort-of friendship, but I just didn't feel the heartstring tugging one expects to feel when reading a romance book. I also got rather tired of hearing Bera's thought about how "lowly born" Curran was. I found the sex scenes to be rather explicit - some readers may find the wording to be quite vulgar in parts.

Summary: A beautiful love story
Review: Nine of Princess Bera's brothers came in peace, but were betrayed and captured by Lord Drust. He holds them in his dungeon. Her three remaining siblings offer Lady Bera in marriage to anyone who frees their siblings.

As good a warrior as any of her brothers, Bera decides to try to liberate her brothers so she would not have to marry anyone. She disguises herself as a weaver to gain entrance to Drust's manor. At the same time Curran the Dark Knight also goes after the prize. Though attracted to one another, Curran and Bera remain rivals until he persuades her they need to team up to succeed. She reluctantly agrees to marry him and work with him to free her brothers. Bera knows that whether they prevail or fail, her life will never be the same.

HIGHLAND PRINCESS is an entertaining Medieval Scottish romance starring a compassionate male knight and an intrepid warrior princess. The story line never eases for a moment as the audience obtains a glimpse of life for adult females. Though the ease in which the hero and heroine capture their enemy is a bit disconcerting, the tale shows that Haywood Smith, author of DANGEROUS GIFTS and SECRETS IN SATIN, is clearly a rising star.

Summary: The Brat Princess.........
Review: should have been the title of this book. At 26 years of age Bera, the main character, acts like she's 6. Not only is she bad tempered, she's a masculine,foul-mouth,plain looking shrew who wants to beat and kill everyone. It's no wonder why her father beat her. I really hated this character. I forced myself to finish this book.

Princess Bera has 12 brothers, 9 who have wound up in Drust's dungeon. Her remaining brothers have decided to use Bera as a prize. Whoever can free her brothers from their prison will marry Bera.Bera, being the overaged tomboy she is, decides to try and free them herself.Disguising herself as a weaver Bera gains employment Drust's castle.

Curran, the Dark Warrior,is also employed at Drust's castle. He's recently heard about the bid for Bera's hand and starts working on a plan to get her brothers freed and home. Curran longs for the prestige marrying Bera will bring him.

Trouble between Bera and Curran start immediately. Curran thinks she a boy hiding under her cape. Possible competition for the princess. Bera slowly realizes what Curran is after. Marriage to him is out of the question, so Bera must release her brother's alone.

There is something that wasn't quite right with this book. The month is December. Much of the food supply at Bera's castle has been stolen by Viking raiders. Children are starving to death. A few weeks later there's suddenly enough food for a feast. Also, Durst is portrayed as an addlepate at the beginning of the book. He's unable to make a decision without his wife's help. His character gets a new personality futher in the book.

This book is not on my recommedation list.
