Summary: You're better off finding another of Ms. Small's books
Review: Ms. Small has always written a provocative and interesting story. I found Deceived to fall far flat of her previous books. The characters seemed shallow and not very full of life. I can appreciate the theme of finding more than one love in a lifetime, but the way inwhich she tried to capture this idea did not quite work.

Usually, Ms. Small's stories go into great depth about the time period she is writing about. This story did at times as well, but somehow I didn't get the feeling of actually being there, which I usually do. For a better read, read ANYTHING Ms. Small has written previously.

Summary: An Apt Title
Review: The readers were DECEIVED!!! This book sucked. Apparently, Small and Woodiwiss have the same agenda- bore their readers to death. What happened to the great writing of the past?

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Not her best, but enjoyable nonetheless!
Review: This book started out just a tad slow, but still enough to keep my attention. I agree with other reviewers that some characters appeared one-dimensional--namely the heroine's sister. Further, later actions and thoughts of the heroine with regard to her sister--after a middle of the book climax, I found a little hard to believe. But aside from having to suspend belief for those few actions and thoughts, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. There was little mincing of words once "love" was discovered, and the sensual portions of the book were just that -- very sensual. Ms. Small is still one of my favorites.

Summary: Predictable...
Review: This is an okay book. Not bad. Not great. Just okay--but hardly worth the price of a trade sized book. The hero and heroine are well suited, the lovescenes are fun to read, spicy but not too exotic or kinky (as readers have come to expect of Small). There was some profanity and some purple prose but it wasn't heaped on ad nauseum (again, this differs from what readers can usually expect from this author).

Parts of this book were really hard to put down but the deception at the end and the plot device involving Trahern were both a trifle boring, and altogether unnecessary and only prolongued the happy conclusion of this otherwise mediocre book. (The ending was a little too trite for my tastes.)

I miss the exotic eroticism of Small's other historicals. She really should stick to writing stories in the 15th, 16th and 17th Centuries.

Summary: Captivating
Review: This is the first book I've read by Beatrice Small and I couldn't put it down. The "shock" value kept me entralled! Ms. Small is very explicit and I found such to be refreshing! Most historical romance books are filled with "fairy-tale" stories with men and women who once they meet, never look at another person or make mistakes. Ms. Small's characters are definitely not perfect and I like this extra touch!! I am now on a mission to search out and buy all other books by this author!

Summary: Definitely not Skye O'Malley
Review: This is the first of Bertrice Small's books I've read that was not part of the Skye O'Malley series and I'm really glad now I read the series first, because this book would have turned me away from Ms. Small forever! What happened to the deep characters, the catch-you-by-the-throat-and-pull-you-in plots that have charcterized her previous books? This book was wishy-washy from the start! I understood that Skye couldn't live forever, but if this is any indication of how future books will be, I'll stick with re-reading Skye O'Malley and forgo anything else!

Summary: A fairly good read.
Review: This was the first book I read of Ms. Small's, and I am a little disappointed! It was ok, but I thought that the characters were a little one dimensional, and I also thought that it was a little long.

Summary: Bertrice - you've disappointed me sorely!
Review: Unfortunately, this book like Love Slave, Betrayed and Enchantress just does not do the author justice. The characters were trite and I didn't care if they worked out their problems or not. While there were some good ideas to explore in the plot, they were never fully developed. It's hard to believe this was the woman who gave us Skye O'Malley.

Summary: Can not believe this is Ms. Small?
Review: What has happened to the great books Bertrice Small used to write? This was a great dissapointment to me. She has been favorite romance writer since I read Skye O'Malley, but this book those not hold a candle to her previous writings. I especially disliked the duke. He was not appealing at all. Her heroes usually make you fall in love with them, he put me to sleep. There was such little romance in this novel it should even be termed romance novel. Please Ms. Small write a novel worthy of Skye O'malley and The Kadin.
