Rating: Summary: Third in the original Soldier of Fortune series Review: This is the story of Diego Laremos and Melissa Sterling. Melissa has been in love with Diego for years. Diego is a mercenary because he wanted to bring in quick money to help his family. The history is that Melissa's mother was to have married Diego's father and bring a large dowry with her, but she fell in love with Melissa's father and marries him. This caused a lot of animosity between the two families, but did not dampen Melissa's love for Diego. One day Melissa wrote a love letter to Diego that she had no intention of giving him. She left the letter on a desk and decided to go for a ride. She accidentally met up with Diego and they were forced to hide in ruins when a minor skirmish broke out. While in the ruins, you guessed it, they had some mind blowing ... and were caught in the act by Melissa's father. This was the catalyst for a shot gun wedding that they were both soon to regret. Diego blamed Melissa for their misery and made sure that he did not come into contact with her once they were married. Diego's family showed their animosity towards Melissa and blamed her not only for the present but also for the past. Melissa soon realized she was pregnant and knew that she and Diego could not divorce due to their religous convictions. When Diego finally returned home she vowed to make their marriage work. She approached Diego and asked him to try also. Diego, the whimp, was afraid of the sexual power she had over him and coldly rejected her by telling her that she disgusts him. Melissa felt mortally wounded by this treatment and ran. She ended up in the hospital and the doctor confirmed her pregnancy and that the baby was okay. She begged him not to tell Diego who thought that the original diagnosis, that she had lost the baby, still stood. Diego feeling guilty now resolved to make the marriage work, unfortunately Melissa does not realize this and is not interested; she does not want to raise her baby in a home filled with hate. She leaves the hospital that night and makes her way to America. Fast forward five year later and Melissa is in the hospital again recovering from an accident that injured her leg and took one of her ovaries. The doctors had notified Diego who rushed to America to care for his wife. He becomes angry, and resentful of the boy that is Melissa son but wants very much to make his marriage to her work. This story is really good and you get to visit with all the Soldiers of Fortune. You even get to read about Apollo and his mad dash to the altar. This is definitely a keeper. Good reading!
