Rating: Summary: If stranded on an island this is the one book to have Review: Every woman in the world yearns to be loved like Marietta. She is strong and beautiful, but you don't hate her for it - you live vicariously through her experiences. What a world it would be if every man had the keen sense of romance the author (a man) has. It is a tragedy this book is out of print, thank you amazon for searching for this treasure for me.
Rating: Summary: I have seen a couple of these books here in Germany Review: For anyone out there that can't find this book I live in Germany and I just came across two copies in paperback. If you are interested I can pick one up for you. Trust me if you have not read this book you are missing out. One of the greatest love stories and I wonder if anyone can tell me if this book has been made into a movie? and if not why not?
Rating: Summary: Here's the books description Review: FROM BACK COVER:"THE TURBULENT STORY OF AN ENGLISH BEAUTY--SOLD AT AUCTION LIKE A SLAVE--WHO SCANDALIZED THE NEW WORLD BY ENSLAVING HER MASTERS" Marietta was a woman wronged--raped by her employer, charged with theft by her jealous mistress, and shipped to the Colonies to serve fourteen years as bound servant to the man who bid highest. But Marietta was beautiful, educated and resilient, with a provocative body meant for love, and she was determined to prevail. Over the handsome, silent planter who bought her to be his housekeeper. Over the dashing enterpreneur who supplied girls to the New Orleans red light district. Over the walthy sadish who used her in his madness. She would conquer them all--if she could subdue the hot, unruly passions of her heart.
Rating: Summary: Never liked any romance novels but this one Review: I have never enjoyed romance novels at all and so it was extremely surprising to me that this book appealed to me greatly when I read it over 26 years ago. I was a teen-age girl when I first read it and this book really made an impact on me! I really liked the fact that the heroine of the story was so independent and full of life. I enjoyed the fact that she was sexually liberated and not full of repressed feelings about her body, desires and sexuality. Well, it is no wonder! I recently found out that the author is actually a male. I think too many of these books written by females are extremely contrived and sappy. The main reason I can't read romance books is because they are so completely unrealistic when they describe sex and relationships. Romance books, by and large, are full of heroines who are looking for Mr. Right. Well, it is more realistic to look for Mr. Right Now. The heroine in this book keeps her options open. She is not some virginal woman waiting to be swept off of her feet by Prince Charming. She knows what she wants and needs and she gets it.
Anyway, if you are a open-minded female without sexually repressive opinions OR if you are a male looking for an erotic story- this book is for you!
Rating: Summary: Incredible! Review: I have read hundreds of romance novels and nothing compares to this book. Almost all romance novels are predictable, not this one, or any of Jennifer Wilde's books for that matter. She has a gift, and I wish her books were easier to find. Even if you are not a romance reader, you will be after this one!
Rating: Summary: I Love Jennifer Wilde! Review: I have read several of Jennifer Wilde's books, and have now started tackling the Marietta trilogy, which only in these days of the Internet, have I been able to track down used copies. Love's Tender Fury is an entertaining read. Reading it in the political correct times of the post-90s, Derek is extremely racist and not a very nice guy. I loved Marietta, but didn't really understand what she saw in Derek. I loved her husband, Rawlins, who in my opinion was the real romantic hero of the story. He had a sense of humor, a dark side and wasn't boring. Jennifer Wilde tends to write about characters who have been around the block a time or two, a refreshing change from the run-of-the-mill recent romances these days with simpering virgins from the ton. Valerie Sherwood is another out-of-print author who writes heroines similar to Jennifer Wilde's characters.
Rating: Summary: My all-time favorite historical romance novel! Review: I love the way Wilde makes the characters and the environment come alive. I walked and camped along the Natchez Trace with the characters every time I read this book! Great story line, with such vivid characters, weaving in a flavor of the times against which this story is set. Kept me enchanted and enthralled, through at least 5 readings over the years.
Rating: Summary: More gore disguised as romance Review: I read romance for that - romance - and not rape, torture and sadism. It's hard to be sympathetic to a heroine who sleeps around, and repulsive to read about constant violence. What was it about this decade that made women think that in brutalization lay true love?
Rating: Summary: My first romance novel Review: I read this book years ago. It belonged to my mother, and I loved it. I am not usually a romance novel reader, but this book is amazing. The heroine is not some simpering little female who lets herself be pushed around, she possesses strength and intelligence, which is something unusual in novels of this genre. Marietta faces many hardships and does what she has to do to survive, even though it may not always be "the right thing." She's kind of like Scarlett O'Hara that way, except not such a b!tch. This is definitely an enjoyable novel, unpredictable and at times heartbreaking. Jennifer Wilde's books are hard to find, but I have found a few in used bookstores for about a dollar each. Although if anyone can tell me about Betrayal at Blackcrest or any other of her (his) books, I would appreciate it. My email is Loopynea22@aol.com. Anyone who writes me for any reason other than discussing these books will be ignored, because AOL sucks and people constantly harrass you if you're unfortunate enough to subscribe to their service. Sorry.
Rating: Summary: ReadingRainbow Review: Like another reviewer this was my first romance novel. I will always thank my aunt to have a great library. Anyway. Once you start you cannot put it down. I was fourteen when I read it and I still remember Marietta and Derek, although my favourite character is Adam. I found out in Amazon that there is a sequel Love me Marietta. It seems dificult to get but now I am looking for it.It is absolutely a keeper.
