Rating: Summary: Entertaining Review: i like reading the thoughts of both hero and heroine, i wish more stories were written this way. i hated Anne Paget's selfish family, best of all Ms. Basso's sensual writing is both romantic and sexy.
Rating: Summary: Missed Opportunities for Better Story Review: The business of handling the family finances, arranging suitable marriages for her younger sisters, and longing to study art in Europe, leaves Anne Paget little time for the pursuit of love. Earl of Mulgrave, Richard Cameron makes time though, when he mistakes Anne for her sister, the woman he plans to discourage from marrying his nephew. Once this is too quickly resolved there seems to be little that would keep the hero and heroine apart. Technically speaking, HIS NOBLE PROMISE boasts impeccable writing, thorough research of the Regency period and picturesque settings and costumes. Too bad the nicely drawn characters rattle around in this lovely shell, conversing about ordinary subjects. Anne as an artist was an exciting premise that could have been used to greater effect. She needed to be immersed in her art for it to be a real impediment to her marrying Richard. Or actually draw him nude, rather than just consider it. Think of the scandal. The art thing never seemed like a threat to their joining. Only Anne's lack of confidence in her skills as Richard's wife and her troublesome family created tangible conflicts between the couple. Richard's war background and daughter by a previous marriage were both a shrug, other than to provide a predicable sub-plot. Other events designed to separate the couple could have been cleared up with a simple conversation. The sex was good, with a few variants to the tried and true. With all of the wonderful use of words and phrases, the main fault of the book was the overuse of exposition. After each event followed long stretches of backstory, a screeching halt to forward momentum. This reviewer switched to scan mode many times. Don't count out Ms. Basso in the future. Once she masters storytelling with the same perfection she has with words, she'll write a hell of a book.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't wait to get home everyday to read this book! Review: This book was perfect! Not only did she have a main romance going on but she also threw in a side love affair between Anne's sister and Richard's best friend. I was so into this book I had to put it down every now and then just to catch my breath. I think I was smiling throughout the entire book. If you like incredibly handsome and powerful men and INTELLIGENT and beautiful woman with a great story line this book's for you. I couldn't decide which guy I liked the best. Because of the 2 romances going on you never got bored with any of the story it kept me on my toes! Please give this book a chance I promise you haven't read anything this good in a long time! :-)
