Summary: pure fantasy...
Review: This book is the first part in a trilogy about three witch sisters in medievel Scotland. The second is The Betrayal, the third is The Knight and The Seer. If you can suspend disbelief-which honestly, is what most romances ask you to do-then I think you'll enjoy this book. The other reviewers have good points, about unlikely names, or if this was that time period, the sisters would have been killed for being witches. BUT, the story is a sweet, fantastical tale-a fairy tale filled with creatures like winged horses, trolls, crones, seers, and yes, even fairies:). It's light, enjoyable reading. If you want truthful and throught provoking-find another book. But if your looking for a lil magic to carry you away from your everyday woes, then pick up this book!

What enchantment, this? A giant of a Highland lord had torn Allegra Drummond from idyllic seclusion to do his bidding! No matter that his reasons were noble, rousing her compassion and concern. Merrick MacAndrew had used a life-transforming magic of his own to bind her to him forever-heart, body and soul!I wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't work up any enthusiasm for this story. It takes place in 1559. Anyone who has read these books knows that this is during the witch burning period. Not only does this Drummond family all have different gifts, but also people know about them and would kill them if possible. To top it off, the Drummond women have given shelter to a "troll" and a "hunchbacked crone". Nothing like posting a sign that says Kill Us Now. The setup in the castle is so, so, -- predictable, that you just want to scream. The villains are obvious and the book was a struggle to finish. On page 286, he says he wants to marry her, but tells her he'll often be away fighting and that she'll be alone to handle everything. My first response was-Right, like she'll be alive when you get back. The first thing to go wrong; wells drying up, livestock dying-Allegra will be toast. Try something else

Review: Langan has been giving solid tales from Harlequin Historical for over a decade. I am still sorry to see they have hacked the length of HH down to this very short length, 284 pages with rather large type. It is one thing for the rest of Harlequin-Silhouette line to have dropped to a smaller size, but historicals need the extra room for...well, duh?...history! You either do the history a shabby turn, or you hurt the plot of the book by cutting it down. Often you would wonder if they are historicals except they ride horses and toss in a few quaint words. Hopefully Harlequin will rethink this "condensed historicals" for they really hurt their credibility and sales. Still Langan does was she can with the limitations. Set in the middle 1500s when the Burning Times rages through Scotland and European, Langan gives us a tale of a family of witches. They had retreated from the world to save themselves, as well as giving a safe haven for a crone and a gnome. But the seclusion is shattered with Merrick MacAndrew comes to claim Allegra Drummond, one of the witches. His son is dying and he will do anything to save him, including kidnapping Allegra known for her healing powers. One complaint, I have with this and many other writers of Scottish Historical - GET A BOOK OF SCOTS-GAELIC names and chose some more accurate!! PLEASE! A nice snowy evening book to cuddle up before the fireplace.

The passion is stoked between sheets of intrigue and mystery, building until it overwhelms the prime characters. A quick read, a well-thought-out plot. Let's hope the second book "The Betrayal" holds true to the first.

Summary: Grab your own highlander and read this book
Review: This was the first book I've read by Ruth Ryan Langan and it held my attention until the very end. I managed to read it in a few hours without so much as putting the book now. Though a few of the minor characters were dull the main characters were interesting. Allegra and Merrick were interesting characters, as was the plot.
