Rating: 5 stars
Summary: a bit dated, but great classic romance!
Review: Originally this was written in the 1940s, and with that understanding I may have underestimated the strength of the female characters (in face of domestic abuse situations) and
the charm of a hero-type romance connection. In all, this is
a classic. Well-written, real 3-D characters, and a keeper in
this house, to be read again...

When young and impulsive Lucy goes to visit her sister Anna at the Casa Isabell, she expects her joy to be contagious. There is the beautiful Spanish coastline, the brilliant sun, the intoxicating sights and sounds of a strange and ancient land. And, most intriguing of all, the mysterious and debonair Frenchman, Lys, whose curious smile is at once passionate and melancholy.
But things are not as gay as one had hoped, they'd be at the villa. Anna's husband, Wolfgang Von Heilder, is severe with his wife, and raises his son with the aid of a cruel and stern housekeeper. Soon Lucy finds her happiness threatened, but with Lys nearby her heart will not be silenced.
