Rating: Summary: Wasn't GWTW but it did give us something to look forward to! Review: I enjoyed the book because of the traveling and it let us see Scarlett and Rhett go on. I have heard that there is now a third book "Tara" , is it true?
Rating: Summary: I feel sooo sorry for Margaret Mitchell !!!!! Review: I have read Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With the Wind" at least 3 or 4 times, and seen the moovie twice. Gone with the Wind is American Literature, an absolute must. Every time I wondered what would happen to Rhett and Scarlett later, and wished Margaret Mitchell had continued the story and brought it to a happy end. So, I was really looking forward to the sequel by Ripley. Although I thought it would be an almost impossible task to write a sequel worthy of the original, I went to read it with an open mind. Gee, was I disappointed ! This cannot even come close to my expectation in style and content! It is cheap soap opera ! Margaret Mitchell must be weeping and moaning in her grave, being insulted like this ! Though the first couple of chapters were still manageable, after being half thru it, the story became so unrealistic and unintersting, that I put the book down and paused reading for a week or 2. Scarlett in Ireland - the whole idea of all that happend to h! ! er there is so out of line and out of touch with the original "Gone with The Wind", it is incredible! Unfortunately, nowadays books that manage to get enough publicity, do not seem to have quality to become bestsellers. To everybody who intends to read this book : Do not spend money on it, at least get it from the public library if you must !
Rating: Summary: soap opera Review: That was a sequel written just for the sake of making the disappointed readers happy. I could read it only because it was a sequel "Gone With the Wind". That novel lacks the spirit of its predecessor. Scarlett no more cares about material things, she goes through a transformation, Rhett marries a regular woman. The conclusion was terrible. The novel's beauty was partially due to its open-ended conclusion. "Scarlett" overlooks that fact.It is a commercial book. If you've just read GWTW and enjoyed it, better not read this one
Rating: Summary: You'll Hate It Or You'll Love It Review: If you like books with happy endings you'll love this book, but if you loved the ending to Gone With The Wind- you'll hate it.
Rating: Summary: If I could I would give this book no stars! Review: I thought Scarlett was terrible. It wasn't Scarlett it was a pale shade of pink. Margaret Mitchell's Scarlett would have never fallen for that guy in Ireland because ,duh, remember she realized she really loved Rhett. She also wouldn't have given up Tara. The lady Anne wasn't anywhere near Rhett's type of woman so he would never marry her. It made Scarlett look trashy and it made Rhett look less dashing.
Rating: Summary: The book is pretentious, long-winded, and a waste of time. Review: This book is an embarrassment to Margret Mitchell. Alexandra Ripley is a tacky, un-original, and cliched writer. If I wanted to read about magic and overly dramatized romance, I'd be in the fantasy section. The book was a waste of time, and I would have been better off had I not known of its existence. It has one star because that's the fewest I can give. Read Gone With the Wind. It's real writing.
Rating: Summary: NOT GWTW !!!!! Review: This book could never amount to Gone With the Wind, and it didn't. Scarlett is not only trashy and uncuth, it is totally unrealistic. The book wouldn't be so horrible if the sex wasn't to that extent. Mitchell portrayed a brave, beautiful woman. Ripley painted a piture of a wealthy tramp.
Rating: Summary: The most wonderful novel ever written! It was fantastic Review: Scarlett was the most ejoyable novel i have ever read. This book is absolutely amazing and so well written that you will hate yourself if you put it down. You will love this novel if you are a huge fan of Gone With The Wind like myself. To the Gone with the Wind fans out there...This is a must read!
Rating: Summary: Can't top a Classic, but Ripley makes a good, honest attempt Review: It's impossible to tope a Classic. So why, then, should we have expected "Scarlett" to compare with "Gone With The Wind?" I believe Ripley did a wonderful job "completing" a novel that really had no way of "properly" ending. After all, it would have to be Mitchell herself to write a "proper" conclusion, and even then, who's to say audiences and critics still would have approved?? It's quite possible that this is one of the reasons Mitchell emphatically stated that GWTW ended right where she left it. Ripley does her best to create a Scarlett who has learned from her past mistakes. She's a bit stronger, wiser, but still looking out for #1. "Scarlett" may not be a Classic, but it gave readers a glimpse as to what might have occurred between the South's legendary lovers. (As for the movie to "Scarlett," don't waste your time or money. It doesn't even remotely resemble the book, and humiliates the sequel even further.)
Rating: Summary: Alexandra Ripley captured the nature of Scarlett O'Hara! Review: Gone With the Wind is a great book, but nothing more than a well-written historical fiction; not all are shallow romances. Alexandra Ripley has met the challenge of expanding one character in the sweeping novel, Scarlett O'Hara, and as far as I'm concerened, it is the same Scarlett about which Mitchell wrote. I've just finished my fourth reading of the novel, and it is Scarlett's growth that holds my attention. It is, to me, a fine representation of "how Scarlett grows up", which is what I wanted to know.
