Drew Calloner , the new Earl of Calverstock , was a man who believed in justice and was compelled to right all wrongs that crossed his path. During one of his missions, he felt an instant attraction to Hero Langage, the daughter of his target, Baron Polhembury.

On impulse he made marriage to Hero part of his deal with the baron, but before the wedding could take place, Drew overheard Hero expressing views that he was surprised to hear from such a well-born lady.
