Rating: Summary: Vivid Description Review: "Like Boogie..." was a highly entertaining, lively and colourful work. The monologue in the beginning does appear to lag a bit as Linda breathes life into "Nina" and the story line (as a writer myself I know the start of a story can oftentimes be the hardest part to feel out) but once the narrative gets rolling the literary ride is magical... a good read that catches you up in its emotional characters and delightful dialogue.
Rating: Summary: It's Like Fire... Review: Five stars does no justice to "Like Boogie on Tuesday." A wonderful story of love, relationships, forgiveness, and family. The characters faced true to life situations with conviction, strength and the wherewithall to weather any situaiton they were confronted with. The book portrayed male and female characters as real people struggling with life. It was hard to put the book down out of fear of missing out on something. Like Boggie...is sure to pique the literary interest of many a reader. You have to read the book to understand. But hopfully the author will scratch out a follow-up. The characters are too rich not too. Kudos to Ms Grosvenor.
Rating: Summary: Superb Review: I recently read "Like Boogie on Tuesday" and would like to congratulate the author for delivering an excellent book. I was so intrigued by this novel, I couldn't wait to finish it. It was so refreshing to read a book that was able relate the life experiences of African Americans without being riddled with profanity and vulgarity. I felt as if I had known Troi, Nina, Tim and Vaughn my entire life. To see the sisters triumph over their personal dilemmas (especially Troi) was emotionally encouraging. Each page brought me closer to believing that true love is something you can have if you really want it. Readers, if you want to curl up with a good book, "Like Boogie on Tuesday" is the perfect choice!Thank you for the inspiration and I look forward to the release of "Fever."
Rating: Summary: Over 15 characters and you lose me... Review: I think Ms. Grosvenor attempted to tell too many stories in Like Boogie On Tuesday. There are a host of characters who all have a host of issues that stem from childhood experiences and/or adult experiences. The main four characters are: Tim -- a womanizing, aspiring filmmaker who loses his parents at a young age and is "mothered" by his older sister. Because Tim can 'get any woman he wants', womanizing and an obvious disrespect for women are his biggest flaws. Nina - one of Tim's many women, is somewhat neurotic and has several phobias. She goes through life with a "what if" stance. Nina has been overweight all of her life, appears to be self-assured on the outside, but really lacks self-esteem from past ridicule and relationships with men that sour. Her mother is a critical alcoholic and her father, quite distant. Troi - Nina's younger sister, owner of the Shangrila Hair Salon, thinks she is happily married to her childhood sweetheart with whom she has conceived her only child, Dakoda. She eventually learns that her husband has been living an "invisible life" and that her happy marriage is not so happy after all. Vaughn - the invisible lifer and Troi's husband, has been battling his confused sexuality since childhood. However, he waits until after marrying his childhood sweetheart and fathering their daughter to act out on his desires. Big mistake Vaughn... There are a host of other characters in this book, approximately 15 total, who are somehow associated with the main four. There are just too many issues and too many people to allow the reader to stay focused and for the reading to flow with ease.
Rating: Summary: One of the best romance/relationship books you'll ever read! Review: I was seriously glad that Grosvenor's book found its way into my life. Just making it through the first couple of pages without profanity and sexual lingo was a breath of fresh air for me. To finally read a book not labeled "Christian Fiction" where the characters actually lift up the name of Jesus was extraordinary. The characters are far from perfect, but Grosvenor weaves a very tight web of issues that many families face in today's society. This book puts a brilliant spin on parenting, love, relationships, family ties, socio-economics, alcholism and other addictions as they unfold in the Black Community. The strength of this book lies in the fact that the characters are strong and resilient in when there's a call for weakness all around them. If you're going through a rough time and need spiritual encouragement, you'll both agree with the characters Grosvenor has created as well as be inspired by the ins and outs of this book. This author certainly knows what readers need today, and she delivers a page turner with absolute goodness and a "do right" mentality. Life is about choices, and in LIKE BOOGIE ON TUESDAY, choices can make or break you. The choice of one date . . . could be the worst decision you ever made, and Grosvenor shows you how to deal with bad choices and still come out victorious. Excellent read! Get the book, and you'll be so glad you did. Latorial Faison ...
Rating: Summary: A Really Good Book Review: I'm no expert but to me, this book was great. It didn't zip by and its characters are three dimensional and tangible. How sad it is for people who obviously have something against this author to write two and three reviews for the same book. Miss Borrrring didn't mention the name of her book did she? Really sad. What boring lives they must lead to keep coming back to post negative reviews. Amazon needs a better system, like only allowing reviews from people who have actually bought the damn book, not just those who want to hate just because. I give it 5 stars because the story was engaging there is alot worse out there masquerading as novels.
Rating: Summary: Horrible Review: I've been browsing through the books here for the last couple of days trying to remember the name of that awful book that i tried to read a couple years ago. I came across the review for fever, then noticed it was a sequel. I read the reviews, then put it in my wish list, and clicked the link to the prequel. I saw the cover to this book and wondered could it be? Started reading the reviews and said YES this is it. Ive been wanting to review this book for so long. Please please please do not buy this book. Stop the madness now. I love to read and have read many different books in many different genres. So i write my review with sincere honesty. This has got to be the worst book i've ever read in my life. It was so bad i couldnt even finish it. Nice to know the fat one got married. Anyway it was so terribly written and drawn out that i said forget it and just flipped to the back to find out what happened to vaughn. That guy got exactly what he deserved. This book was entirely too long and just took forever to get to the darn point. I cant believe it has such high ratings on here. I was sure that this thing could only get 2 at the most. So based on the fact that this was given 4 stars i will now take fever off of my wish list. I can not even imagine wasting my money trying to suffer through another book by this author. She either needs to cut it short or give it up. Thank you.
Rating: Summary: Get Ready for a ride of a lifetime Review: Imagine your favorite glass of wine, or better yet...a hot steaming cup of chocolate topped with marshmellows - that is how good "Like Boogie on Tuesday" is. If you like contemporary novels that introduces characters that you want to know intimately, then look no further. LBOT's premise is pretty simple....the story follows the lives of four central characters who lives are impacted by secret desires of people in their lives. Nina, a smart, full-figured sister whose career is flying high, but inside her soul lies a girl crying out for much more. Through Nina's journey you see her flourish from an insecure woman to a woman who demands respect in her relationships. Nina's sister Troi, a successful woman who has a loving home, and perfect relationship with her husband, Vaughn., is unaware of a secret desire that is eating him alive. Vaughn's desire which almost consumes him and his life with Troi, will demand him to make a decision that will test his spirituality and the love he has for his wife. Tim, a superfine, superfly brother, is a film student who has a knack for making women weak in the knees. His life is going smooth until one day he receives a call from a former lover, a call that is threatening to change his life forever. Through his spirituality and his life changes, he learns how to let go and let real love into his life. LBOT's author, Linda Dominique Grosvenor, manages to discuss real-life situations (AIDS, sexual responsibility, self-love, body image and truthfulness in relationships) through beautiful prose that wraps itself around your soul. Once you begin to read this wonderful novel, you don't want to let go of these characters. They are warm, they are real and you can image one of your very own friends as these characters. Her writing is explosive as she takes the reader on a journey...four separate journeys that end up on the same path...self-love! LBOT is a novel that has many twists and turns and Grosvenor definitely turns up the heat in the story. I am looking forward to reading more of her works. She is a force to be reckoned with and I savored each of the characters. Grosvenor fleshes out each character, showing us their beautiful flaws, and completes their story lines excellently. I definitely would recommend this as a hot read for 2002.
Rating: Summary: Too Many, Many Narratives Review: It pains me to have to write this truthful review on this book for the simple fact that I met the author at a book signing and she seems to be a nice person. However, the truth is Like Boogie on Tuesday is an extremely slow moving novel. It is a very thick book with many pages (around 540 pages or so) and not a quick read at all. It takes until about the first 150 pages or more to really find out what the book is really about and what is actually going on. I was totally lost in the first 80 or 90 pages. I am a book lover and I found myself wanting to just give up and toss this book aside, but I decided against that. Another thing about the book is that the author wrote it entirely too proper, which makes it boring. She should have loosened up her language and dialogue. I really struggled to finish it. I heard that there is a sequel to this book, but I doubt that I'll read it, since this book is an indication of slow, boring and overly written. I don't mean to sound discouraging, but this is what reviews are all about. I am only speaking the truth from my perspective. Mrs. Groversnor has writing potential, no doubt, but she just needs to tighten up on her storytelling approach, get to point of her story more swiftly and excitingly, and use a thesaurus more often in simplifying words. Thank you.
Rating: Summary: Delicious read! Review: Like Boogie on Tuesday is a beautifully written book. The characters, each wrestling with his or her issues and demons, are rich, memorable, and engrossing. This novel is not a fast-food type of read. Rather, it's more along the lines of a sit down, gourmet meal. Ms. Grovesnor's style of writing insists that readers take their time enjoying every single page, every episode, every revelation. Linda Dominique Grosvenor is a true wordsmith, and Like Boogie on Tuesday, is a curl up with a cup of hot tea, your favorite blanket, and an escape from it all mentality kind of read not to be missed!
