Rating: Summary: Heartwarming coming of age story! Review: Our story takes place in California in the year 1952. Minnie Capstan is a mixture of different nationalities, part Russian Jew and part Yokut Indian, among others. Because of all the grief she received in school, she graduated early. Now she's working in her parent's hardware store. Before long, she knows they will try to get her out of the house due to their large family. As she gets ready to ride her bike to the bus stop, she notices the fog. It's different than most fogs and Minnie has the strange feeling her life is going to change. That afternoon, her best friend comes in the store. She wants to go to the fairgrounds where they're setting up a carnival. Reluctantly, Minnie agrees to go with them. As they're standing outside the fence watching the men work, Minnie has the strangest feeling come over her and wants to leave. When she finally manages to pry her best friend away from the man watching, the girl's car won't start. Alfredo Santori is trying to forget his past. He's been drifting through life lately and finally drifted into a job as the manager for the carnival. When he sees Minnie stranded, he offers the girls a ride home. He manages to drop Minnie off last and gives her a stack of tickets for the carnival. While at the carnival with her family, the woman in a cook trailer offers her a job. When Minnie doesn't accept right away, the woman gives her a week long pass to the carnival. Well, Minnie eventually takes the job and when the carnival leaves, she leaves with it. The best thing about working in the carnival is Alfredo. Will anything happen between Alfredo and Minnie? What of Alfredo's past? What is he running from? DANCING IN CIRCLES is a wonderful story about life in a carnival. This story is more about the characters than anything else, and what characters they are. We have everything from the Jewish owner of the carnival that keeps her husband's ashes in a mayonnaise jar to the man that thinks he's God's gift to women. This is also a coming of age story as Minnie leaves home for the first time and learns about herself the farther they travel. Debra Tash has done an excellent job with all the characters in the story. If you're in the mood for a "feel good" story filled with all kinds of zany characters, don't pass this one up.
