Rating: Summary: A Great Love Story....Could Use A Better Ending Review: I agree with some of the other reviewers concerning this book - the ending was abrupt and it seemed like the book was unfinished. I would hope that it would be rewritten with an epilogue or a better ending.
That being said, I really liked this book. This was Ms. Burge's first book and I think she did a very good job with her story and characters.
Varek and Christina have known and have been pledged to each other since they were children. They were wed when Christina was barely 16, as she was with child. They shared an intensive love for each other, but suffered through 6 miscarriages. After the last, Varek is forced to set Christina aside and marry another, who, hopefully, can bear him a child. Christina cannot bear to witness Varek's being married to someone else, so she flees, along with her trusted protector and Varek's dearest friend, Sergei. She winds up in England, emotionally scarred and deeply depressed. Eventually though, she marries Robert St. Pole and bears him a healthy son. She tries to put memories of Varek and their past life out of her mind and succeeds reasonably well. However, Robert's political ambitions find the couple having to attend a congress in Austria where Christina and Varek meet again after so many years. Varek's second wife died in childbirth, and he now is raising his daughter Tina (named for you-know-who). Christina finds that her love for Varek has not died and Varek vows to win her back.
They struggle with many emotions, love, betrayal, anger, jealousy, guilt and duty, just to name a few. Both of these characters are flawed human beings - they are selfish, they use others, they can be cruel, but the underlying theme here is a once in a lifetime love. Varek and Christina are soul mates and I found myself rooting for them all the way through this book. I hope Ms. Burge does SOMETHING, a sequel, a rewrite, anything to make the ending more satisfying for Varek and Christina, and for us readers too.
Rating: Summary: great story Review: I picked this book up by sheer chance, and finished it that evening. Varek and Christine are great charactors, and kept me interested till the end. I thought the ending was a little abrupt, but at least it was fairly happy. There are some reality problems (6 miscarriages and they don't suspect anything?) but over all I would reccomend this book. Christine and Varek have been married for 10 years, and when Christine can't produce a child, Varek is forced to set her aside. Christine, unable to watch her husband marry another, runs away and marries someone else. When they meet again in venice 6 years later, Varek's wife has died in childbirth and Christine is married with a son. What follows is the struggle Christine has, both against Varek and her desire to be with him. I am definitly going to try her next one "While you slept".
Rating: Summary: VERY BAD ENDING needs a re-write Review: I was prepared to love this book. Was told that this was a excellent book and I dove into it with enthusiasm. Boy was I dissapointed. :( First of all the story is a sad one 2 people that have loved each other their whole lives, were married for 10 years, and due to the Heroines {Christina} inability to carry and birth an heir, this union of 2 soul mates were seperated. Varek, our hero is obsessed with Christina... in fact I can safely say that this feeling was mutual (in some regard) I am not like other reviewers that found this kind of love unhealthy, I just think that what they shared was DEEP. What I did not like about this book was the inconsistency and the flow.... the present husband was uneven, the story was all over the place, Christina's attitude towards her husband was ridiculous (seeing as she was less than honest with him... she was pissed off at her Present husbands reactions to Varek) and last but not least the ending.... OH MY GOSH!... without giving away spoilers that is about all I can say other than the fact that they ended it very poorly. The author never explains something at the end of this book which literally leaves you hanging.... it is as if she was told to wrap up the story immediatly and that is just what she did. I'm disheartened because I really felt the love between Christina and Varek, I did get the feeling that they were as one, but all of those emotions were overuled because other things in the book just didn't flow right. I recommend reading this book if you are the type of person that can read a book and not criticize grammer errors (I found a few), not expect the flow in the book to always make sense and can be okay with a ending that ends happy but not necessarily answer all the questions. I'm off to read her latest one "While You Slept" and hopefully it is much better than this one. Respectfully Reviewed
Rating: Summary: One of the most fabulous books I've read in a long time! Review: In 1808 in the Grand Duchy of Austenberg, Christina reluctantly tells her husband Varek that she is pregnant. He fears the news as he loves his wife, but she has suffered several miscarriages before. He knows if it happens again, he will have to adhere to the responsibility as the Duchy's ruler that requires he divorce her, remarry, and get the heir from his second wife. Tragedy strikes as Christina suffers another miscarriage. Six years later in England, Christina is married to Lord Robert St. Pole. They have a child Eddie. When Robert is assigned to go to Vienna for the Congress, his wife is required to accompany him. In Vienna, Varek sees Christina for the first time since she fled their home following the divorce six years ago. He has looked for her since without any hint of where she went. Christina informs him that she could not remain in Austenberg as his mistress. Varek insists he and Christina are soul mates, even as Robert jealously objects that she is his wife, but mostly she has Eddie to consider. The first half of LOVE ME AGAIN is a great historical romance due to a cleverly designed triangle highlighted by a powerful dilemma and great insight into 1815 Vienna. However, the tale chooses an easy solution by changing Robert's behavior from a loving father and husband to a jealous half-crazed lunatic. Though entertaining, Wendy Burge's climax turns too simplistic leading to a tale that falls short of what had the makings of one of the Regency's top novel of the year. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: awesome story Review: It has been a long time since i have read a story that was worth reading. I picked it up on a whim and couldn't put it down. All the characters are well developed and you find yourself immersed in the story until the very end. Lots of things going on (war, love, deceit, etc..) What a surprise ending, I had no idea what was coming. I hope too that we will see a sequel. This author is a sleeper and I hope that she continues to keep her stories unique, unlike many other great authors, who put out books due to publisher demands, which turn out to be worthless stories. I have found an author as great as Jude Devereaux was. Good luck to her future in writing.
Rating: Summary: It's like watching a train wreck... Review: Romance? The "hero" is a psychopath, who believes that he is the center of the universe. If someone gets between him and what (or who) he wants, he has the right to crush him like a bug. The heroine is a doormat who believes that the hero is the center of the universe. ("I love him! I love him! Forget my husband and child! I love him!") How nice of her husband to conveniently die, so that she and the "hero" can be happy together! The only comfort I got was the knowledge that once these two were together, at least they couldn't make anyone else miserable. (Except for their children, who have to live with these nuts.)
Rating: Summary: Very Highly Recommended Review: This book is a keeper, it's non stop emotions you won't be able to put this book down. I know I did not. Ms Wendy Burge is a fantastic writer, keep right on writting. I would love a sequel of Christina and Varek because it can't end like that.
Rating: Summary: Very good story! Review: When I read some of the other reviews I was unsure if I wanted to buy the book. I took a chance and was happily suprised! I felt for both Christina and Varek through out the entire book. The author did a very good job in making me both angry at Varek and feel for him at the sametime. The only thing that kept me from giving this book a 5 was the ending. The ending was good but a little abrupt and I thought it would have been very nice for the author to give us a glimpse into the Christina and Varek's future. All in all it was a good story which I am glad I took the time to read!
