Summary: Great cover
Review: Feisty Anne Morgan is returning to England from Spain with her new husband - an ambassador when the ship she is on is set upon by English privateer, Jonathan Leighton. In the ensuing battle, Anne's husband panicks and jumps overboard rather than be taken prisoner. Anne blames Jonathan for her husband's death. Jonathan, on the other hand, suspects Anne of being in league with her husband in a plot against Queen Elizabeth. Jonathan takes Anne as his prisoner, determined to find out the truth. Alas, he has met more than his match. Anne soon charms the crew and instigates a mutiny.

I was intrigued with this book right from the start. The story is very good and is skillfully woven into a tapistry of Elizabeth history. I would recommend this very highly.

Review: Please let me start by saying that I have not yet written a critical review. I am fairly easy to please in the romance novel dept. so this is difficult for me to say~ but this book did not meet my expectations for it. The cover is beautiful and the historical premise is fascinating and well researched. Where I found fault was the actual writing itself. The opening sentence, "The air was cold and damp." is not too far from "It was a dark and stormy night." The plot is fine but the descriptions are lacking innovation. There is far too much "telling" -- a writer's term for not showing enough through the actions of the characters. Instead they used narrative far too much when I would have rather seen the descriptions shown through the actions and dialogue of the characters. If one wants to read about this particular time in the reign of Elizabeth it would be helpful and fun to read for that reason. As a romance however, there are others that are more original in their descriptions.
