Rating: Summary: Newcomb's is the best handy field reference Review: As an outdoor field biologist, I have worked with a variety of wildflower field guides. Newcomb's is my favorite because it gives the most comprehensive and systematic key that relies heavily on vegetative (non-flowering) parts. It starts with petal numbers, then quickly goes into factors of "leaves oppostive or alternate", "leaves toothed or lobed." If you like tree leaf keys, you will like Newcomb's. It is especially useful when identifying small plants at restoration seeding sites, non-flowering plants, and plants recovering or impacted by heavy deer browsing.
Rating: Summary: Newcomb's Wildflower Guide Review: Based on the hardcover first edition of 1977: With this guide in my pack I've been able to identify just about every wildflower I've encountered coast to coast. After answering 5 basic questions (all easily answered by looking at the plant) you are lead to a selection of similar plants where drawings (in color or black and white)are the final step to identification. The drawings are clean and clear; much easier to use than the photographs in many plant guides
Rating: Summary: Flowers don't come in black and white Review: Because color is one of the main identifying characteristics of wildflowers, it doesn't make sense to print the drawings in black and white. Sorry, but this book didn't work for me.
Rating: Summary: Newcomb's from (...) Review: Dissapointed. Not as easy to use as imagined and the example i used did not work well with the ID system. I would not have ordered the book anyway had I known it was restricted to its geographical area (amazon needs to improve its description!) And the "anonymous" will not uncheck!
Rating: Summary: A superb system for identifying wildflowers of the Northeast Review: Ever wonder what the name of that flower is that you see on one of your walks? Here's a book that lets anyone, regardless of botanical background, figure it out! Just answer a series of simple questions about the number of petals, the shape of the leaves, and so forth, and you are led to the page that identifies the flower. Small enough for a rucksack, take it with you on any of your nature hikes
Rating: Summary: Very Useful Aid Review: Fantastic book with superb drawings as well as useful writings on the identification of native plants. Book is small and compact yet the binding makes the book excellent for pressing specimens until they can be properly stored.
Rating: Summary: Very Useful Aid Review: I bought this book after being on a wildflower walk with a local nature group. It was recommended by people on the trip as the bible and indeed its very handy. You have to get used to working with it since its driven off of knowing the plant parts/forms. Its quite a good reference though. I actually use it in combination with some others I have since plant id can be tricky

Rating: Summary: A regional book Review: I have not read this book. I just want to warn potential readers that, in my understanding, this book, while excellent is only about wildflowers of the northease and northcentral U.S. I reader from Texas or Arizona might want a flower book about New York but if he were to use it at home he would be quite dissappointed. Thank you. Don Richardson
Rating: Summary: Biology students love this book! Review: I have talked to all my classmates in my Field Biology class and they think this book is terrific. It's actually a required handbook for that class. Instead of returning it to get my money back, I decided to keep it to use in my biology classroom when I become a teacher. This is an easy to use book that has great pictures. I carry it with me when I go on nature hikes. I have yet to find a plant that is not in this book! If my biology teachers can realize the value of this book enough to make it required material, I am sure you will love this book. Whether you are a serious biologist, student, or someone that loves nature, this is the book for you.
