Rating: Summary: Comprehensive, trustworthy information, an important book! Review: Di Pilla covers the full spectrum of slip and fall prevention, including theory, standards, testing, and design considerations. This book, along with Turnbow's "Slip and fall practice", represent the most comprehensive and honest treatment of the topic. Beware some other books on this topic that are put forth by those with hidden agendas. The area of slip resistance measurement in particular is fraught with controversy, and relying on a simple web search will return as much inaccurate and misleading information it does anything of any use. If your work or study involves the prevention of slips and falls, this book is an absloute necessity.

This book presents a scientific description of slip resistance measurement, methods for ensuring accurate and repeatable quantification of slip resistance, and recommendations for maintaining slip-resistant workplaces. I highly recommend this text for anyone serious about controlling slip/fall hazards. The illustrations and photos are excellent and the text is clear and direct. If your work requires the investigation, correction, or litigation of slip/fall accidents, this book belongs on your reference shelf.

Rating: Summary: A valuable resource. Clear, concise, objective. Review: If you are reading this review you may already know that Slip and Fall incidents represent a leading cause of workers' compensation and general liability claims for service industry sectors, including heathcare, hospitality, retail and restaurants. Experienced safety professionals will quickly see the value in this book. But it is the corporate risk manager, HR generalist or in-house facilities engineer charged with finding effective solutions who stands to gain the most.
Steve Di Pilla ranks among the most respected voices in the world of Slip and Fall prevention, He goes out of his way to offer useful, unbiased information. This handbook offers practical real-world recommendations.
Rating: Summary: Excellent coverage of the field Review: Mr. Di Pilla has done a fine job of describing the field of pedestrian falls. In particular, he describes how and why people slip and fall, what management can do to reduce falls, relevant standards, which industries are most prone to slip and falls and methods for preventing these falls. The text is highly readable and well illustrated.
Rating: Summary: Practical & effective - highly recommended! Review: Mr. DiPilla has written a practical and effective, yet comprehensive handbook on the important safety/risk management topic of slip and fall prevention. This book will be of value to organizations and individual practitioners interested in improving pedestrian safety results.
This book is worth it for the pedestrian safety codes and standards alone, which is from my perspective the most comprehensive and insightful treatment of this topic to be found anywhere, at any price.
While I would have preferred to see greater explanation about the mechanics of obtaining financial protection through certificates of insurance and "additional insured" status (financial risk transfer), the topic is covered in sufficient detail for a novice to implement.
Overall, the book is written in a very direct and straightforward style. However, the reader may occasionally need to do a little extra research to get the most from the book. I consider this handbook to be most valuable for the intermediate to advanced safety practitioner. An example of this can be found in the section devoted to recommended snow removal practices: "Anhydrous chemicals are hydrophilic and should be avoided".
With more than 25 years of pedestrian safety experience (as a director of risk management for a large health care organization, forensic consultant, and commercial insurance risk control manager), I thought I knew everything there is to know about slip and fall prevention. I was delighted to learn about additional pedestrian safety solutions from reading this book.
"Slip and Fall Prevention, A Practical Handbook" is not inexpensive. It is, however, an excellent value. This book will pay for itself many times over by implementing just one of the many ideas and techniques that you will find within its pages. Mr. DiPilla has done his homework, and those concerned with the issue of pedestrian safety can benefit from this book.
I have no doubt that readers will find something of value, and that the author will help you to effectively implement practical techniques to prevent/mitigate injuries associated with slips and falls. I wish I had written it...highly recommended!
