Summary: troy
Review: This book is very well written and a bargain at the price. It gives very good descriptions and lets you know that there are more than one way to do a reef aquarium. It is a little much for someone just trying to get into the hobby but I would recomend it to anyone that is trying to get into the hobby as a second book and get one geared a little more for the beginner as the first book.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Pretty book but misrepresented
Review: This book represents itself as a low-tech simplified reef-keeping guide. Instead the author suggests almost every gadget out there. Including calcium reactors, RO/DI, etc.

I guess is was wishful thinking on my part that there truly exists a simple way to keep reef aquariums.

It does have great pictures and is nice for inspirational purposes.

Summary: Excellent Reference for the Beginning Marine Aquarist
Review: This book should form the foundation for any hobbyist willing to take the next step into marine aquaria. Tullock provides an insight into the steps required to set up an aquarium right the FIRST time, thereby avoiding the costly exercise of fixing things after you ahve brought the tank home and set it up !!!

I strongly recommend this book, and suggest that the reader finishes reading it before they buy their new setup. For the person who already has the tank at home, it provides a great insight into the modern methods regarding marine aquaria, and dispels some of the myths that are in the minds of some antiquated shop owners !

Summary: Good, comprehensive book, but I'm not a marine biologist.
Review: This is a great book for the person that has taken a lot of biology in college, but it's a little much for the average person trying to start a reef tank. Granted, I have learned a lot from this book, but I find myself having to read things over and over again and looking terms and species names (which there are a lot of) up for their pronunciations. I am very excited to learn about reef tanks and how to set one up, but this feels like a school text book rather than an understandable guide on how to do it. I do like the book, but you definitely have to have a dictionary next to you and the time to look up things.

Summary: Comprehensive, great info on simulating regions, great photo
Review: This is a wonderfully comprehensive book on the challenging project of keeping a salt-water reef aquarium. Although still technology dependent, it emphasizes natural materials and methods to simulate this complex environment.

Plumbing, temperature control, lighting & filtration systems are covered in detail with step-by-step instructions on setting up the aquarium and establishing a living reef colony utilizing live rock & sand.

My favorite feature of the book is the detailed analysis of the reef biology of different regions with recommendations for simulating them in the aquarium. These include Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and Pacific reefs.

There are great color photos throughout the book of the fascinating & beautiful corals, invertebrates and fishes that can inhabit the reef aquarium. A superb list of sources completes this essential reference.

Summary: Excellent for reef-keeping beginners
Review: This is an excellent introduction into the world of reef-keeping. The stunning pictures first caught my eye at the bookshop, and prompted me to buy the book to learn more about marine aquaria.

In the end, the book gave me much of the basic knowledge I needed to construct two reef tanks, first 40, and later 110 gallons.

I had always bought into the myth that marine aquaria was "for experts," but Tullock's book quickly dispells this notion. Indeed, the book gives a basic overview of all of the required equipment necessary, including the various biologic filtration methods.

Definitely recommended for anyone considering diving into the weird, watery world of reef-keeping.
