Summary: Allenby's unique and honest view on industry&ecology
Review: Mr. Allenby is in a unique position concerning Industrial Ecology, he is one of the leading figures of the multinational AT&T. The lawyer, who got his Ph.D. in environmental engineering later in life, takes a critical look at the industry today with 'green glasses' on. He successfully describes the relations between Natural-, Technological-, and Cultural systems, and sustainability in terms of physics, engineering, but most important, in terms of law, economics and social aspects. All of these relations are described in order to create a policy concerning sustainability. He also highlights 'the technological fix', which engineers and company management has: 'You have a problem, no matter how big, we'll fix it, because we can!!' When asking the biggest part of managers in big companies:' Can industry and sustainability coexist?', they all shout:' YES, OF COURSE!!' Allenby actually dares to defy this, and leaves the awnser of this question in the middle, which is more a realistic view on the matter. For an executive of AT&T, this is a darefull attitude. This book looks at the industrial world as it is, with an honest view. However there is one point, which could have been done better in this book. The awnser to the main question is not given. The beginning of the book looks promising, however in the last part; these promises are not met. This book is written in high-standard English, which, for native- and foreign English readers, makes it difficult, but wonderful to read. Therefore this book can be seen as a handbook concerning Industrial Ecology. Definitely five stars!
