Summary: organ retrieval and management
Review: This book covers a very important and sensitive medico-social subject which needs more understanding and education in order to improve organ procurement and preservation.

The book is compact and easy to use as a handbook. It starts with adequate contents and contribution list. The editors and contributors to this book are well known and have a vast experience in organ transplantation, procurement and preservation. It is composed of 11 chapters covering brain death diagnosis, the optimal approach to the family to improve organ procurement as well as the best way of management of the organ donor. It has also chapters on organ preservation, methods of assessing suitability of the cadaver donor and a chapter on ethical issues in organ donation.

Throughout this book, the text is well written, easy to read, diagrams are relevant and distinct and each chapter ended by a good number of recent references. However, in chapter, 2, page 18, in the religious consideration section, there is a mistake regarding the Islamic view toward organ donation. It is written that donors should have consent of donation in writing prior to their death, which is not true. Islam encourages organ donation and consent from next of kin is acceptable.

This book is directed to all professionals involved in organ retrieval and management such as transplant physician, surgeons, intensivists, tranplant coordinators, nurses, administrators, etc. I would recommend this book to all staff working in the field of transplantation and it is essential to the medical library.

Review: This handy, pocket-sized book is primarily intended for residents and nurses but would also make a handy manual for other transplant professionals like organ procurement coordinators in their training. The spiral binding and layout present a pleasing look. Many of the issues surrounding successful organ procurement are now resolved and the procedures standardized across the U.S. With the enlargement of the transplant community, more and more people wish to train in this field. However there are still relatively few books dealing with organ procurement and management. Moreover this subject is of interest to multiple specialties including cardiac, thoracic, urological, and abdominal surgeons. This book is edited by acknowledged experts in the transplantation field who have invited faculty from major transplant centers in the U.S. to contribute chapters in their field. This book deals competently with all the issues concerned with donor identification, assessment, workup, stabilization, and organ procurement. Ethical issues and the physiology of brain death are briefly touched upon. Surgical details of intraoperative management are well discussed although lacking in clear diagrams, checklists, and highlight boxes for quick reference/revision. The bibliography is relevant and up-to-date and there are plenty of details to assist those actively involved in patient management and many pointers to future trends and progress to pique the interest of researchers attracted to this field. his book fills a much needed gap, with comprehensive collation of material related to organ procurement. It should serve as a valuable companion to residents involved in transplantation, complementing their clinical experience with the rationale for the various procedures and practices.
