Summary: Many badly printed pages
Review: I am still in the process of learning solitons from this book, hence it is not very easy for me to offer an opinion of the merits of the book. But I assume that there is a whole batch of copies out there with awful printing quality between pages 117 and 147. The ink from the one side of each page has penetrated almost all the way to the other side making the reading very tedious. I returned my first copy, only to have it replaced with one having exactly the same problem

Summary: Excellent introduction to solitons
Review: Several years ago, I decided to come up to speed on solitons, having heard an interesting talk. Someone recommended this book, and I obtained a copy, along with several other titles. I found it to be a helpful general road map through the maze of results and specialties in this fascinating field. It is still my favorite reference, although it, of course, is only an introduction. One must go further in the literature to get to research level topics. If you are just starting our, or want to own only one book on the subject, I would suggest this book. I will add that books on soliton theory, in general, tend to be very expensive, and are often poorly written. This book possesses neither of those common failings. (Note added later - I cannot address the comments made by the other reviewer regarding printing quality. My edition (early) is fine).
