Summary: Excellent book
Review: I wouldn't say this book is hard to read, as the other reader claims. On the contrary I found this book to be very readable. It starts from the very basic quantum mechanics of wave function, introduces density matrix, then semi-classical laser theory (EM field interaction), even discusses relaxation phenomenon (see the nice appendix on the quantum langevin equation!), then presents the real quantum theory of light interaction with matter. Without doubt this is a classic work, and should easily be accessible to upper-year undergraduates. There are no major difficulties.

Review: why write a book that is so hard to read? I think that my cleverness is not enough to subtend the hard math.
